History of a less-known, but important in its way, airfield, 19 July 2004
This review is from: Target Rolling: Llanbedr Airfield 1941-2002 (Paperback)
On the train to Porthmadog I saw an airfield by the seaside with something that looked like a Jindivik drone as gate guardian which piqued my curiosity. The map indicated that this was Royal Aerospace Establishment Llanbedr, so when I just happened to find Wendy Mills' little book on the subject in the cafeteria by Tan-y-Gwlch station I realised I had received a Sign and bought it.
The book is similar to W. Taylor's works on RAF stations, a chronologically ordered history of a less-known special-purpose airfield, mixing gossip about the staff with information about the work done and aircraft moving in and out. In the case of Llanbedr, most of its history has been dedicated to the development and flying of target drones - remotely-piloted aircraft used for shooting practice with guns or missiles. The airfield has gone through numerous reorganisations and its future is apparently unsure, but one gets great sympathy for the people who work there, skilled in a very specialised art.
Both target tugs and drones tend to be extremely colourful aircraft for maximum visibility and there is a plethora of impressively high quality photographs of the aircraft - the Jindivik of course, but also rebuilt Fireflies, Meteors and even a couple of Sea Vixen. As target tugs and "shepherd" aircraft we see Canberras, Hawks and Alpha Jets. My modelling fingers just itch to paint all these.
Mills writes a very fluent and well-organised text and I found this a very interesting presentation of a subject I knew very little about. However, one question still bothers me: How can it be necessary with *five* persons to fly something which basically is a large R/C plane? Why is the steering system of the Jindivik so cumbersome? This may be the subject of a different book, maybe one of those listed in the bibliography section.

excellent history of a closed down airfield where my husband worked., 27 Dec 2009
This review is from: Target Rolling: Llanbedr Airfield 1941-2002 (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for on our shelves as my husband worked in Llanbedr airfield for 35 years before it closed down. Great photographs and interesting news for the family to look at and read.
