Product Description

CD Description

The Jones Girls, originally from Detroit, consisted of sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones. They served as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass and Aretha Franklin. In 1983 they relocated from Philadelphia International to the RCA imprint for one album entitled 'On Target', (including '2 Win U Back', 'On Target' and 'Knockin'). After the release of their fourth U.S. album, On Target, produced by Robert Wright & Fonzi Thornton, lead singer Shirley Jones pursued a solo career and had a #1 R&B hit on Billboard with "Do You Get Enough Love", from her top-ten debut album Always In The Mood.

Bullseye! 23 Oct 2011
By Starr S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
After four albums on Philadelphia International/CBS Records which featured hits in such R&B staples as "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else," "Nights Over Egypt" and "Who Can I Run To," The Jones Girls headed over to RCA to record their fifth outing, "On Target."

The same dreamy harmonies are still here, but there is a new sound apparent. Instead of lushly orchestrated R&B, the volume is turned up and the synths are brought in to update the sisters' sound a la Melba Moore and Evelyn "Champagne" King.

The results?...No hits unfortunately, but a sound that is both new and refreshing, as well as dancefloor-saavy with a couple of Jones Girls ballads tossed into the mix for good measure and balance. The Pointer Sisters come to mind with their triple platinum "Breakout" CD. The best cut on the entire CD by far is the very urgent, "2 Win U Back." Funkytowngrooves really outdid themselves on yet another otherwise forgotten Funk classic and shortly thereafter, Shirley would return to Philly International Records and present a successful solo outing with 1986's #1 hit single, "Do You Get Enough Love" from her album, "Always in the Mood."

"On Target" would be the last Jones Girls album recorded.

They should not have left Philadelphia International Records for RCA. 3 Sep 2011
By Justo Roteta - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This 1983 release was The Jones Girls' sole album for RCA Records. Unfortunately, the ultra-high-tech production and even the choice of material leave plenty to be desired and do not fit The Jones Girls' style at all. Robert Wright and Fonzi Thornton ("On Target"'s producers) apparently felt it was appropriate to move The Jones Girls in a more Dance/Club music direction but the result was an album almost totally devoid of the lushly-produced, elegantly-arranged, soul-stirring and at times thought-provoking material that characterized their "At Peace With Woman" and "Get As Much Love As You Can" albums. If you liked The Jones Girls' Philadelphia International albums you will probably find "On Target" very disappointing.
