well i've just finished this book and apart from the very ending, which in my view spoilt the nature of this thriller-only just mind you, this was a very good book.
the charactors are really well identified and you can relate to them.the plot is well outlined and everything falls into place as it should and gives you the complete picture which in my view only helps you enjoy this book more.
this is a very well written story, which mixes romance, political intrigue and a good dose of suspense.
i've just ordered her previous works, this book being that good.

Holly kills an intruder in her house but realises that he must have been sent by her husband to kill her. She takes her young son and flees but is surprised to discover that the murder must have been hushed up because there is nothing in the papers. This makes her sure that her husband will come after her so she has to live a very quiet life. Meanwhile, elsewhere, Meredith's mother has died revealing that she gave a child up for adoption and urging her to find this half sister. Meredith gets no support from her father and suddenly it appears that her life is in danger.

The story alternates between these two storylines as Meredith attempts to find her half-sister and Holly tries to hide. Both are in fear of what might happen to them, and rightfully so as we also see into the minds of the powerful men who are trying to control them. This is, sadly, a book where the women are in danger because of the actions if powerful men and where they need other men to protect and help them. The reason why everything is happening strains credulity at the seams when we find it out. This story may have been stronger if the two women had met each other much nearer to the beginning of the book - as it is written it seems more like two separate stories and the instant attraction between the two women when they do meet seems unrealistic. The romance element of the story is OK, if a bit rushed.

As a romantic suspense novel this works well enough but I think that I would have liked the suspense element to be a bit more to the fore and for it to be more robust in the plotting and believable in the outcome. I received a free copy of this book from the publishers via NetGalley.

was given this book by netgalley in return for an honest review.

Meredith was asked to find the half sister she never knew she had by her dying mother. Given up for adoption over 30 years ago Meredith was given very few clues to find her. Then strange and terrifying things began to happen.

On the night Holly ran from a verbally abusive husband she killed an intruder that was trying to kill her. She took her 4 year old son and disappeared, after years of abuse she was finally free, or was she.

What is the connection, is there a connection?

Meredith set out on her quest to find her half sister, but then people involved began to die. Who and why is someone trying to prevent Meredith from finding her sister? What is the great secret?

Patricia Potter has written an enthralling murder/mystery/thriller with lots of twists and turns. Keeps you engaged and turning the page to find out what happens next. Well worth a read and would recommend.

Oh, how I loved this book! 15 Aug. 2004

Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is, without a doubt, one of the the best romantic suspense novels I've read in a long time. The story grabs you at the beginning and takes you along for a wonderful page turning ride. I simply couldn't put it down and didn't want it to end. It's suspenseful, romantic, and heartwarming with a good dose of retribution. I loved it.

This is the first time I've read a Patricia Potter novel and definitely won't be my last. She gets added to my favorite authors list.

Once again...a lovely story that will keep you turning the pages.

An exhilarating romantic suspense 7 Jan. 2004
By Harriet Klausner - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
After an intruder enters her home, Holly Mathews manages to kill him. However, she realizes the culprit needed help to break in as he disabled the security system by punching in the code and had the front door key. Concluding that her husband Randolph wants her dead, Holly flees her home taking their son Mikey with her. Holly relocates under the guise of a widow with a son Harry (for Potter), calling herself Elizabeth Baker in Brisbee, Arizona.
Her dying mother informs Meredith Rawson that she has a half-sister, who she wants treated right by splitting a trust fund between them. Meredith confronts her father who is in denial. He, in turn, calls someone to warn them what occurred, but is told to fix it or else. Now someone wants Meredith dead with only Detective Gage Gaynor, working a cold murder case that ties to her powerful family, keeping her safe.
COLD TARGET is an exhilarating romantic suspense with ever increasing tension as the half-siblings who did not know the other existed are in danger from powerful interests. Though the climax seems shaky, the story line moves at full speed so that the audience has quite a ride while waiting to learn the truth. The romance takes a somewhat back seat, yet is not neglected as readers receive an entertaining action-packed thriller.

This was my first book by Potter and it is a great one. I rushed to buy her others, they were not nearly as good.
So to those of you that have read her before - be sure to buy this one. It will exceed your expectations.

Nail biting suspense!! 25 Oct. 2005
By Tracy Vest - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
New Orleans socialite Holly Ames flees her home after killing the hit man sent to silence her with her toddler in tow. She reinvents herself as artist Liz Baker in a small southwestern town, trying to evade the husband and father who would betray her, and catches the eye of the local sheriff.

Across town, Meredith Rawson receives a deathbed request from her dying mother to find the child she was forced to give up. Her father asks her to drop the subject for her own good, then an attempt is made on Meredith's life, and soon she is plunged into the dark underbelly of politics and police corruption as she searches for her long-lost half sister with the aid of police detective Gage Gaynor.

Soon, Holly's quiet existence is turned upside down as the good guys and bad guys converge to either rescue or silence her. There is plenty of nail biting suspense to keep you caught up in the plot until the very last page. Potter does a great job mixing romance with suspense and avoids the clunky dialogue to prevalent in romantic suspense and keeping the reader hooked for the outcome.

A pleasant surprise! 19 Oct. 2006
By Denny - Published on
Format: Mass Market Paperback
This is the first novel of Patricia Potter's novels that I've read, although I have browsed the covers of a few, but deemed them too far on the 'romance' scale for my liking.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. The suspense angle is really good, the story well told and interesting. I would definitely class this novel up with Tess Gerritsen, Lisa Garder, Lisa Jackson etc, and I'm hoping she'll concentrate more in the thriller/suspense/mystery genre in the future. It will certainly encourage me to take a further look at her other titles.
