Review

From the ancient brochs, to the gorgeous wild ponies, to the enormous skuas, the raw splendor of the Shetland Islands comes alive in this mystery. Tregenza brilliantly harnesses the charm of wonder of this magical setting and wraps it around an exciting adventure. Young readers will be easily drawn into solving the puzzle with Jack and Izzie. --Peggy Tibbets, Silt, CO USA

Review

When one expects Vikings and barbarians and simply finds civilization, you'd expect to be underwhelmed. "Tarantula Tide" follows Jack as he finds himself vacationing in Shetland, a land with a history far more interesting than its present. When he meets Izzie, his vacation suddenly turns strange, as Jack's own private secrets may soon come to light. "Tarantula Tide" is a unique children's mystery, sure to please young adult readers.

A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
It is a great childrens book. I really loved the research that the author has done. I loved trying to guess the ending, but I was completely wrong though! The friendship in the story between all of the neighboughs had a real family feel. Don't be put of by the title because Octavia the tarantula is a sweet and really really clever, pretty spider! If you are between 9 to 12 years old this book is perfect for a adventurous book worm! Well done Tregenza team!

This story won the Floris prize for a first time children's book set in Scotland, and it's easy to see why. It's fast moving and exciting, it has two engaging main characters in Izzie and Jack, and it has supporting characters in the shape of poisonous spiders and Shetland ponies, plus a whole range of baddies. (Or are they? Not everyone is quite what they seem...)

But one of the things I liked best was the feeling it gives of life by the sea. The space, the light, the smell of salt and seaweed - Jack may not have been very keen on it, certainly at the beginning, but I loved it!
