Biography

Detroit. Willesden. Olympos, on the Greek island of Karpathos. “The inside of our skulls”. These are the places that make up Holy Fire, Foals third album, their most direct and fully realised album yet. Foals have stepped up from, as Yannis puts it, "songs for indie clubs" to something much, much bigger. Their third album might not sound like Depeche Mode or Nine Inch ... This is what can only really be described as a mix tape produced by Foals made up of sounds that presumably the band are inspired by and are listening to.

If you were a fan of their 2nd album and only dabble with their first this may not be the album for you. If you enjoyed their first album, which Yannis described as "40 minutes of drones" on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, then this may be more up your street. Antidotes was the kind of album you listen to and think 'this is one cool album' and the same applies for this compilation.

I've listened to most of the album including the Foals Tapes Mix and on the whole it's a very chilled and has sounds similar to that of SBTRKT, Little Dragon and Caribou (a remix of Sun is featured on the album). If you enjoy that kind of music then the album is definitely worth buying, if you're more of an indie fan then you might want to think twice, listen to some of the samples first.

However this is a brilliant compilation (just listen to Variations by Nicolas Jaar) and would recommend it but as I say, it is definitely NOT your normal Foals material.

There's no doubting Foals are an interesting band with some killer moves under their belt but this mixtape falls a bit short. I bought this with the hope that I'd get an insight into the influences and likes of the band. It's largely comprised of modish electro(nica), detroit techno, some hoary old Chicago house and the odd wildcard like Konono no.1 with their hand-made thumb pianos.
While perfectly pleasant, it's never more than mildly diverting and the 'mixing' is rudimentary at best (more of shunting tracks together).

The vocal pre-amble at the beginning suggests the concept of a cassette mixtape, so why bother mixing at all? I want dynamism from a mixtape, songs that make me search out new music, a window into the soul of the compiler (see Coldcut's classic Journeys by DJ or the original All Back To Mine for example).

I expected more...

I thought I was buying an album by the group "Foals". I wasn't! However I wasn't disappointed, this album is brilliant. A eclectic mixture of house and rave styles. Fantastic listing!
