The year 2013 has been a banner one for Pat Metheny. After being awarded his 20th Grammy, for Unity Band, and the release of his critically acclaimed recording of Tap: John Zorn’s Book of Angels, Vol. 20, Metheny received word that the readers of DownBeat magazine had voted to induct him into its Hall of Fame. Not only is Metheny the youngest member, but he is also only the fourth jazz ... Read more in Amazon's Pat Metheny Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Alchemical 22 May 2013
By Sordel TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The last guitar-based exploration of Zorn's Masada material was the rather wonderful Masada Guitars (2003), on which three leading guitarists were featured. Now Pat Metheny has followed in the footsteps of Marc Ribot, Tim Sparks and Bill Frisell by releasing his own album of Masada material ... and the results are in some respects very surprising.

Using his "orchestrion" of instruments triggered mechanically from the guitar, Metheny sounds for much of this album like a full band, even though the only additional musician is Antonio Sanchez on drums. The arrangements and reharmonizations - coupled with the range of lead guitar voices used - go some way towards justifying the rather extended length of these tracks.

In addition to the range of instrumental colour, though, Metheny has managed to distinguish the tracks strongly. There are moments in "Mastema" or "Tharsis" that sound very much par for the Book of Angels course, but contrasts abound on this album. "Phanuel" - a protracted piece of pastoral that emerges out of chilled ambience - is one such highlight: a piece with a depth and intensity that has rarely been equalled in the entire BoA series.

To go from "Phanuel" to the game-style mechanical wildness of "Hurmiz", which sounds like the player piano works of Conlon Nancarrow, is to step between very different worlds. While other interpreters of Zorn have attempted to show a stylistic range, none has been quite so persuasive.

In all honesty I find that some of these pieces (for at least some of their length) can meander, and the album could have been even more convincing with more, and shorter, pieces. That said, however, this is a major entry in this large series and perhaps the best by a star guest not already strongly associated with Zorn.

I hope that we can hear more of Metheny & Zorn working together in the future, since both seem to benefit from the collaboration. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Harder to adapt to than some 25 Aug 2013

Unlike much of Pat's output, this requires more than the odd listen before it comes right. Some complex rhythms and structures at work here. If you have not listened to Mr M's work before, there are easier places to start than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pat M - Living Legend 4 Feb 2014
By JohnG
Format:Audio CD
Based on the number of reviews that this album has got on Amazon it is probable that this review may not be read by many people. It is perhaps a shame that not more people appreciate Pat Metheny as the genius he is. The liner notes in the CD written by John Zorn describe Pat as a Living Legend. They are written from the heart and and provide some beautiful words about an amazing musician and some incredible music. I was fortunate enough to discover Pat's music back in the early '80s and I am so glad I did. He has been a constant presence over those years and through all of the other artists I have listened to. Of the various musical projects that Pat has pursued my initial favourite was his work with the Pat Metheny Group, some of the his more avant garde or pure jazz projects left me a little cold. In recent years I personally feel that it is his other work that has shone more brightly. From his solo acoustic guitar work, his new venture with The Unity band and now this incredible recording. Despite a few rather difficult passages, this CD provides some beautiful and amazing music with a wide variety of styles and sounds. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant album 3 July 2013

One of Pat Metheny's best.
Well worth having in our collection, but as my husband now is listening to this in his car, I will probably have to invest in another copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 6 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A must for modern jazz and Metheny fans. Metheny keeps up his current purple patch of excellent recordings in recent years. Echoes of Orchestrion and Unity Band but a harder edge (Mahavishnu Orchestra) Jazz and Avant garde (from Zorn's backyard naturally) is also present. Still perfectly accessible but progressive music if you ask me. Yet another landmark recording in Metheny's long and distinguished career. Is there a more versatile progressive musician (let alone guitarist) making such high quality music around these days? Not in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tap: The Book Of Angels Vol. 20 4 Jun 2013

Another nice Pat Metheny for his fans. Tends towards "Avant Gard" but that doesn't detract from the music. PM plays all the instruments except drums.
