Product Description

This is an introduction to Taoism examining the background of the way and relating Taoist thought to ethics, the natural world and to Chinese art and symbolism. Taoism is one of the three great religions of China and is the most mystical of them all. The author describes how the religion is sustained by paradoxes and its central theme is the intermingling and balancing of the two great powers of nature - the equilibrium of Yin and Yang.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Prof D. F. Pocock on 28 April 2002
Format: Paperback
The very best introduction in one volume is Lao Tzu's 'Tao Te Ching' but for the English reader J.C,Cooper's work stands head and shoulders above all recent introductions to Taoism. Ms Cooper combines a thorough scholarly grasp with an intimate sympathy with her subject. It is subtitled 'The Way of the Mystic' but there is no mystification or self-indulgence with the occult. The author's exposition is as lucid as her understanding. She does not seek to convert and her exposition is of value to anyone of any religious affiliation or none who is intersted in the way of the spirit.

This is a basic text to purchase if you want to know about the science and spiritual practice of one of the earth's oldest and most profound but yet effective methods to get the guck of modern day life out of your system. And not only that, but also as a way to walk the Path (Tao or Dao) to Liberation. The ancient Chinese knew we are each of us a combination of physical body, energetic breath, and mindfulness. The time may have arrived for us to walk that walk. If it has for you, this book should aid you on the way. John Voigt, editor qi-encyclopedia.com
