Book Description

1 Nov 2011
For nearly two generations, this translation of the Tao Te Ching has been the standard for those seeking access to the wisdom of Taoist thought. Now Jane English and her long-time editor, Toinette Lippe, have refreshed and revised the translation, so that it more faithfully reflects the Classical Chinese in which it was first written, while taking into account changes in our own language and eliminating any lingering infelicities. This beautiful oversized edition features over a hundred new photographs by Jane English that help express the vast spirit of the Tao. Also included is an introduction by the well-known writer and scholar of philosophy and comparative religion, Jacob Needleman.

Lao Tsu’s philosophy is simple: Accept what is in front of you without wanting the situation to be other than it is. Study the natural order of things and work with it rather than against it, for to try to change what is only sets up resistance. Nature provides everything without requiring payment or thanks. It does so without discrimination. So let us present the same face to everyone and treat them all as equals, however they may behave. If we watch carefully, we will see that work proceeds more quickly and easily if we stop "trying," if we stop putting in so much extra effort, if we stop looking for results. In the clarity of a still and open mind, truth will be reflected. Te—which may be translated as "virtue" or "strength"—lies always in Tao meaning "the way" or "natural law." In other words: Simply be.

3.0 out of 5 stars words but no photographs 27 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
Please be aware that this paperback version is the text only and does not include any of Jane English's beautiful black and white photographs. It is only 107 pages and not 144 as stated on Amazon. Its a nice pocket size travel companion but unfortunately it's not all that I was expecting. I wish I didn't have to be so negative about such an influencial and enlightening text, however the description of this edition of the book is not complete on Amazon and I wish other potential buyers to be aware before they buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tao-te-ching By Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English 26 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
With the Chinese language a direct word for word comparison is not always possible.I feel that this translation is the best that I have seen of the Tao-Te-Ching

3.0 out of 5 stars Warning! 3 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
If you order the paperback version under formats at the top of this page, you will end up buying a different book!
There seems to be a glitch. Try it. If you click on the paperback version the next page that loads will show a different book cover. It is the Tao TE Ching translated by Dwight Goddard and edited by Sam Torode, not this one. I didn't notice and got the wrong book.

If you go to Amazon.com you can "Look Inside" both books and compare the translations. Personally I find the Goddard/Torode version, though it wasn't the one I intended getting, is much easier to comprehend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, quick delivery but Be Warned!! 6 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a remarkable edition.

The translation is my favourite of all English translations I have read, and it is presented beautifully with fantastic and fitting photographs,
however be warned this is not a travel-sized book.. I was hoping to take it on a bike trip but it's much larger than I had in mind, it is quite a big book!

If you are considering buying this, I highly recommend that you do. It is, quite simply, brilliant.
