Product Description

Product Description

The Tao Te Ching, roughly translated as The Book of the Way and its Virtue, is an ancient Chinese scripture. Tradition has it that the book was written around 600 BC by a sage called Lao Tzu ("Old Master", also transliterated as Laozi, Lao Tse, Laotze, and in other ways) a record-keeper in the Emperor's Court of the Zhou Dynasty. The short work is one of the most important in Chinese philosophy and religion, especially in Taoism, but also in Buddhism. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers and even gardeners have used the book as a source of inspiration. Its influence has also spread widely outside the Far East, aided by many different translations of the text into western languages. The book covers large areas of philosophy from individual spirituality and inter-personal dynamics to political techniques. The Tao Te Ching is said to contain 'hidden' instructions for Taoist adepts (often in the form of metaphors) relating to Taoist meditation and breathing. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

Sage and philosopher Lao Tzu was a record keeper in the Zhou dynasty court during the 6th century BC. In the religious form of Chinese Taoism, he is regarded as one of the three highest deities. James Legge (1815-97) was a Scottish sinologist, a Congregationalist missionary, and the first professor of Chinese at Oxford University. In addition to the Tao Te Ching, Legge is known for his translations of the Confucian Analects, as well as the works of philosophers Zhuanzi and Mencius. The Cleveland Museum of Art, established in 1913, holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Chinese art in the United States. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

To be honest I couldn't quite understand this book but anyone familiar with its teachings will be better placed. It was extremely cheap and I thought it might be interesting which is why I bought it. Not for anyone who doesn't understand this sort of thing...not easy bedtime reading!

I have been reading much on the Toa and this book is a really great simplified version of the ancient text.
The content is very much what i was looking for and is a great help for understanding the Toa.

Not great 16 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I may be too harsh but I was a bit disappointed with the translation. I felt the cover art was a bit underdone compared to other Dover Thrift efforts. That is not my main concern with this product, however. The translation is not great. I have read editions which deal with the massive grammatical difference between English and Chinese better. I would recommend the Wordsworth Classics edition of Tao Te Ching to those less familiar with Taoist philosophy.
