Heider bases his book on the Taoist 'Tao te Ching' and allows us to see how it applys the the way leaders enhance (or, more often) disrupt group dynamics. It sees groups as flowing, ebbing and changing things that can not be meddled with, without it having repercussions. The imagery is very much derived from translations of the original text, and will appeal to lovers of metaphor. This is a wise book, rather than a clever one. A gem for anyone taking the role of leadership (managers, teachers, group leaders) seriously.

I don't remember how I came across this book, but it has never ceased to assist, reassure, help, please and lift me. I have about 8 or 9 books on the Tao, and this is the clearest, simplest and most relevant translation for me. I not only have 2 copies myself but have given at least a dozen copies to friends and relations. Above all, after 10 years, it is still the one book I would choose to take with me to my desert island!

I am a computer science student and have hardly anything to do with leadership apart from ruling my own life. And found this book the most helpful source of advice in coping with today's crazy world. I found just one book comparable to the level of this book : "Only the paranoid survives" from Andy S. Grove. P.S. Tao is the thing to believe in.
