Alexandre Tansman: Sinfonietta 1 & 2; Divertimento; Sinfonia picola While the chamber symphony is the only premiere recording on this new Chandos release, it is worthwhile even if you have the fabulous recording (see the link) conducted by Israel Yinon. The recording is up to the high standards of Chandos, even though this release, unlike the previous releases, is not available in SACD. Caetani is not as spirited a conductor as Yinon, but finds a depth that is not present in the earlier recording. The chamber symphony is particularly haunting, and Caetani is not put off by its dissonances. This Chandos release is with a renowned Italian chamber group, unlike the others with an Australian orchestra. Perhaps Caetani was more at ease with his countrymen. If you have the other three recordings in this series, you will want this one without question. Those who are coming to Tansman for the first time will find the composer at his best, before his works were so highly influenced by Stravinsky.
