5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent production with good singing 18 Nov 2007

This is a truly beautiful production with a traditional setting. Casilly is a good Tannhauser. His opening aria, sung in the venusberg, is satisfactory, if lacking in power. Troyanos, as Venus, is very good indeed. Elizabeth is superb but it is the scenery and production values generally. This Paris edition of Tannhauser is everything I want it to be and doesn't disappoint. The ballet at the opening of the opera is fantastic, really first rate stuff. Don't hesitate to buy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sombe as expected of Wagner 5 Mar 2014

Lord of the rings stuff. Not generally a fan of Wagner but the music is excellent. Dark and sombre story. Levine handles Wagner magnificently - he is in his element

CETTE REPRESENTATION DATE BIEN SUR MAIS IL Y A HEUREUSEMENT DES PRODUCTIONS ANCIENNES DE GRANDE VALEUR.CE N'EST PAS LE CAS ICI OU EVA MARTON ET TATIANA TROYANOS NE S'INVESTISSENT PAS ASSEZ DANS LEUR ROLE.PAR CONTRE BERN WEIKL EST REMARQUABLE. IL Y A D'AUTRES PRODUCTIONS TRES SUPERIEURES.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short of the mark 18 Oct 2011
Format:DVD
I have been studying Wagner since the days of the Flagstadt and have therefore some familiarity with the subject but I have yet to come across a New York Met production that comes up to scratch. I am sorry to swim against the tide of opinion but whilst this performance is excellent in terms of costume and scenery, the singing by the principal parts does not come anywhere near the standard set by the better European houses.
With Wagner there is a very wide gulf between best and next-best.
