This, the second book in the Sort Target trilogy, is another gripping, fast paced story of international terrorism, set primarily in Liverpool. The use of thinly disguised 'celebrities' in the story somehow adds to the book's appeal, and lends a sort of wry humour as the story unfolds in, at times, a very graphic manner.
Conrad Jones is certainly a master story teller. His plotting is eminently plausible and frighteningly topical. His characters are developed in great detail, leaving the reader wanting to hear more and more about their exploits.
Having said all that, I didn't feel that Soft Target 2 was quite up to the standard of Soft Target 1. Other reviewers have commented on the many errors in the use and spelling of words, and I know the author is currently involved in an edit which will doubtless sort out all those issues. They didn't particularly bother me but I know others would find them irksome.
But for me, the story was slowed down in many areas by the regular insertion of wordy descriptive passages, often unnecessarily repetitive. I skipped in excess of 20 Kindle pages when a large part of the 'finale' action from Soft Target 1 was more or less lifted en bloc from that story, when a paragraph of summary would, I feel, have been more appropriate in covering the 'history' of the hero and the villain.
But to put this minor criticism in perspective, it doesn't in any way detract from the huge enjoyment to be gained from Conrad Jones' writing. I have already started Soft Target 3, which shows all the signs of being another superb story, and I have the other 4 books by this author lined up and ready to go. Greater praise cannot be given to a new author than to read his first novel, and, on the strength of that, download his other 6 books, and I would urge all those who enjoy thrilling adventure stories to get to know Conrad Jones, and buy the books at the very friendly current Kindle price.
