Amazon.co.uk Review

In Tank Girl, director Rachel Talalay's aggressively hip adaptation of the cult comic book, it is 2033 and the earth has been clobbered by a comet; civilization has been destroyed, and it hasn't rained in 11 years. Nearly all the water on the planet is controlled by the evil Water and Power Company, which is in turn controlled by the even more evil Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell). Who stands in the way? Mysterious mutants called the Rippers and, of course, Tank Girl. Lori Petty plays the eponymous, wisecracking, defiant heart of the movie as kind of an inner child gone wild. Unfortunately Petty can't quite carry a movie on her own--her zingers frequently fall flat and she seems to be continually worried that we still like her. Luckily there's Naomi Watts as Jet Girl to save the day: smart, shy and inherently way more appealing than Tank Girl. For all it lacks, Tank Girl is visually an eye-popper, worth watching for the insane set and costume designs alone. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

From the Back Cover

ATTEN SHUN! We've got a swell story to tell, so let's get started before the swelling goes down.

The year's 2033 and since a humongous meteor hit earth , the world just hasn't been the same. NO celebrities, No Cable TV, No WATER!!!
A mega-villain, Kesslee (Malcom McDowell), the leader of Water and Power, holds the world in his graspsince he controls all te H20 down to the last drop...or so he thinks. Two colossal enemies stand in his way: (1) The Rippers - an army of halfmen/half kangaroo people whose sole job is to bring down the W&P, and (2) a chick with a tank and tons of attitude - a.k.a. Tank Girl (Lori Petty). With a chip on her shoulder and a grenade in her pocket, Tank Girl sets out to face off with the demented bad guy. So kesslee had better get a grip on reality and his water jugs, because when Tank Girl teams up with the Rippers (including rapper Ice-T) and sidekick Jet Girl (Naomi Watts), not even a run in her stockings is going to stop her from saving the planet.

If you're into face visuals, outrageous action sequences, hip, alternative soundtracks and non-stop explosive laughs, you'll love this rip-roaring power surge of a movie.

When it came out, and ever since, it seems that the film Tank Girl has been universally slated. I feel that this is somewhat harsh. Certainly, if you compare the film with the comics that inspired it (which I have read by the way) then you can definately see a difference between the original and Lori Petty's Tank Girl. Therefore, for a real Tank Girl comic fan there will be disappointment. However, as a film in it's own right, Tank Girl is not half bad. It is set in a post apocalyptic future (this is the only similarity with Mad Max as mentioned in a previous review), however, if you compare every film set in this environment with Mad Max (a fantastic film I must admit) then you might as well compare every sci-fi space movie with Star Wars. Lori Petty acts out Tank Girl with tongue very firmly in cheek and puts in an energetic and lively performance. My favourite moment is the song and dance routine at the Water and Power showgirl club - very funny.

This film does not set out to be something which requires immense brainpower to take in, it's just there to provide enjoyment. This is a film that you do not have to think about, it's bright, fun, has stunning visuals, a great soundtrack and all in all something to chill out in front of.

If you don't take things to seriously and just want a fun action film to watch then Tank Girl might just appeal to you. I know that many out there hated this film but I really enjoyed it and think that Lori Petty is absolutely awesome.

Tank Girl; try it, you might like it!

Classic! 28 Nov 2009

Absolutely classic film. Lori Petty is amazing as the off the wall Tank Girl and a very young Naomi Watts looks ace as Jet.
This film has been a favourite of mine since it came out when I was in my teens and I was a little aprehensive that it may be somewhat dated by now but was pleasantly surprised that it is just as good today as it was back then. Brutal performance by Malcolm McDowell and Ice T is as surly as always.

This movie has stuck in my mind for a long time and it still remains one of my favourite top five films. I was never a Tank Girl comic fan (not a comic fan at all) so I was able to judge this film with a complete lack of prejudice. Colourful, imaginative, inventful, devoid of adulthood. And the feminist bit DID work.!
