5.0 out of 5 stars Action all the way!! 21 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is by far the best book yet from Stephen Leather, and I have read them all!!
This book races along from the very first page with very little 'descriptive' padding.
It is about three new police recruits in London who find that their first day at the Hendon training centre is cancelled and they are 'recruited' as undercover police officers with a long term aim of capturing the biggest drug baron - Den Donovan.
I found all of the characters believable and interesting. In fact, this is the best book I've read for ages and I read a lot of books!

This is the first book that I have read of Stephen Leather's and I am sure to be reading more! The action and intrigue grips right from the start of the book - I couldn't put it down.
Leather had me feeling sorry for the bad guy and at the same wondering what the good guys were really up to and if they were going to surface. Which were which again?
Three new police recruits are taken out of the routine training programme and put into undercover work. Their aim: to infiltrate (and hopefully take down) one of the world's biggest drugs barron, Den Donovan.
But Donovan has problems of his own to worry about.
A brilliant novel with plenty of detail, but not too much to get bogged down in. I highly recommend to anyone who loves the thrill of a great page turner!

2.0 out of 5 stars Drugs thriller - pros and cons 13 May 2002
The best use of this book would be to convey an idea as to how the drugs business works - and it does succeed at that, I am simply not sure whether I can trust the information, having no access to other sources. What I like about the book is that evil doings are described as natural part of the business: when torture and murder happen, they come as predictably as an invoice. When discussing with perpetrators atrocities he barely escaped, the main character, drugs baron Donovan, is quoted several times saying 'In the reverse case, I'd have done the same thing.'
The novel's characters are rather shallow, especially the very few female ones. They are not much more than elaborated cliches put to at times lengthy action. Much space in the book is given to description, and often this adds rather little to the plot. Numerous times the main character is described as checking shop window reflections and backing up, to see whether people may be following him.
The only female character, Tina, one of the deep undercover agents working as lapdancer, is hardly developed beyond the fact that she escaped stepfather abuse, had to work the streets, and managed to escape from it through evening classes. Nothing (apart from the purposeful workings of plot) explains that she could seriously begin to like the main character, Donovan, at bottom a nasty chauvinist thug lacking any positive traits apart from a rudimentary concern for his only 9 year old son. That he nearly kills one of Tina's customers who pestered her after following her to her flat can hardly endear him to her. That she acts liking him is part of her undercover job, that she then seriously begins to like him is hardly credible...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 31 May 2014
By Rowie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As usual the plot was excellent, gripping and compelling reading. The story line was well constructed and the main players very believable.
High tension at the end as the last consignment did not arrive and Sacha watched the cock fight waiting to carry out his task.
I could read Stephen Leather novels all day.

5.0 out of 5 stars good but a bit far fetched 27 Jan 2014
By Jrkis
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You have to suspend your reality check. The storyline is every bit as gripping as other of his stand alone thrillers and espionage novels. I thoroughly enjoyed the twist at the end but I had guessed the ending because the story became predictable as soon as Louise appeared on the scene. Nonetheless it was a good read and now I have read about 10 of his books. He writes well; obviously well researched as a good reporter would do but the characterisation is superficial. The plot is good if somewhat unreal but that doesn't detract from the literary techniques he uses to capture your imagination and keep you reading and then feeling bereft when the book ends. So - just buy another one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Author 15 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Stephen Leather is an outstanding author. His Spider shepherd series is simply brilliant, insightful and addictive. Whilst some of his other material appears to be based around the Spider Shepherd character - they are all still as addictive and interesting. Highly recommend any books by this author.
