A rare gem. 10 April 2008
John Dexter (Christopher Bowen) is a dashing young Englishman from Singapore's wealthiest merchant family.Julie Soong (Khym Lam) is a breathtakingly beautiful young girl from one of the island's most respected Chinese families.Their love is forbidden but nothing is as tempting as forbidden fruit..........
Banished to opposite sides of the world by their families, the young lovers try to build new lives apart but are drawn back by fate to Singapore just as the second world war engulfs the world.Through the maelstrom and horror of the Japanese invasion they must fight to keep their love and help rebuild their shattered paradise in the dangerous peace that follows.
This 7 part series was originally broadcast in 1989 and is full of romance and action. It was an instant hit and it's easy to see why.Lush cinematography and a superb cast all come together to make this a forgotten classic of British television.Highly recommended.

As I served in the RAF in Singapore during the 1950's this film was particularly poignant to me, my wife and myself thoroughly enjoyed the series, waiting to watch the next episode eagerly. The film sets were wonderful and the story lines brilliant, disappointed when the series ended, would recommend to all enthusiasts of series of this nature,

An epic story based on one of Noel Barber's wonderful books. It is a very accurate historical story and a joy to watch especially if you have ever lived in Malaya or Singapore. Old and young viewers alike will enjoy this video as it is also a romance.
