This guide to Tamworth has been thoughtfully created by textile artist, Claire Wood and produced by MADE*, the regional architecture centre in the West Midlands. Claire was invited to create a map working with local people (and in this case young people). The aim was to rediscover the town, not from a typical historical or tourist perspective, but from a local s viewpoint. As part of MADE* s programme to examine ideas around local distinctiveness and sense of place, we asked a local artist to develop a guide to the specific and distinctive aspects of Tamworth town centre; local distinctiveness as defined by locals. The process we used in this case was to invite local people and young people to join an artist and an architect on a walk and create a guide for the town. The walk took place on a rainy Sunday afternoon on 24th June 2007, artist Claire Wood and Marco da Cruz of Sjolander da Cruz Architects were guides on a walk with no map, just a simple rule that the walkers should lead the guiders. Claire brought the process to life further with an interactive and expressive workshop in bespoke shirt appliqué making for teenagers who hung their work symbolically in their favourite place.
