Reviews

After Tammy (Debbie Reynolds - Singin' in the Rain) and her Grandpa (Walter Brennan - Rio Bravo) find Peter Brent (Leslie Nielsen - Naked Gun) alone and unconscious near their Mississippi home, they take him in and restore him to health. But when Grandpa is arrested for bootlegging, Tammy is forced to leave their riverside shack and goes to stay with Peter and his family in luxurious new surroundings. But will Tammy ever feel at home in high society, and how will she cope with the first stirrings of love? This beloved romantic comedy (originally released in the UK as Tammy) was a huge hit on its original release, along with its chart-topping title song. Tammy and the Bacheloris a delightful classic for all generations and is now available for the first time for home viewing in the UK

Having last seen this gem when I was a nipper at the Saturday afternoon matinee, it was with some caution that I watched this movie again. Would I feel the same about it as I did then? No problem. A lovely film about first love and living in the 'wild' as opposed to "civilization".

A ridiculously young Leslie Nielson, an even younger cute-as-pie yet worldly wise Debbie Reynolds and a bonus with good looking William Reynolds (where did he disappear to?). It's a movie to treasure and enjoy.
My copy is very clear for such an old movie and delivered promptly.
Definately recommended for the nostalgic! Five stars because it lived up to my expectations from so long ago.

This is a film I loved as a child at the cinema in the 50s. Old fashioned but I love it.

The title might scare some people off, but just watch it! Unlike some of the other sweet 50's comedies it is not only for girls, my husband actually enjoys this one (though he might be slightly hesitant to confess it to other men). It is one of the few movies that has you smiling from start to finish. Debbie Reynolds is a pure treat. She is absolutely charming as the 17 year old river boat girl forced to make her way in the big world. The comedy comes from all the miscommunications throughout. Her innocence and ability to misinterpret what others say. After all she's going to do some painting with a boy(when invited to go paint the town red). It contains the wonderful song Tammy which hums on in your mind long after Debbie has stopped singing it.

Being somewhat of an old romantic, I can't understand why I haven't seen this film before (probably thought it would be too 'girly'). Debbie Reynolds was a real beauty - she only looks about 17 in this film although she was probably 25 or so - playing an innocent and seemingly naive southern gal living alone in the backwoods of Mississippi with her widowed grandpa (a producer of illegal spirits). The story follows her escapades and pursuit of love as she attempts to adjust to the finer ways of the upper classes when, following grandpa's imprisonment for bootlegging, she goes to live with the family of the man she and grandpa brought back to health after his plane crashed near their riverside home. Not entirely unexpectedly, it is the lives and attitudes of those around her that change, as they become enamoured of her endearingly simple but, nevertheless, wiser ways.
The film features the immortal hit song 'Tammy' beautifully sung by Debbie. This is pure nostalgia and highly recommended for family viewing. Just a pity it wasn't longer, being only 89 minutes.

Not as I remembered it, as I thought it was staged in the hospital. So if there was a follow up film in the hospital where she still sings Tammy I would appreciate anybody letting me know please. Thank-you.
