A heartbreaking tale that many Tamil Sri Lankans will relate to.
How ordinary peaceful people can be brutalised and a land so lush and lovely all but destroyed.
See my account of one family's journey "The Land of Lost Content" also on amazon.
Well done Niromi, this could have been any of us. I am so sorry they took your youth and your innocence.

HASH(0x95b9f2f4) out of 5 stars Extraordinary story from an 'ordinary' woman 13 July 2011

As a middle class, educated girl like Niromi, I could not help feeling stunned (and a little inadequate!) reading her account of her youth in Sri Lanka - a far cry from my own in the UK, yet occurring at the same time. This is an amazing story - and well written, providing enough information to allow the reader to appreciate the circumstances and reality of the life Niromi faced without getting 'bogged down' in the politics and history of the situation. It is a compelling read.

Well written, easily read and strikes at the heart of most Tamils - no glorifications and flag waving, but an honest account of a singular experience.. Singular?

HASH(0x963a10fc) out of 5 stars Gripping subject and great writing! 4 Sept. 2013
By nakumaran - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Despite all the controversy this book and especially its author has attracted, I am absolutely glad that I picked up this book as one of my reads this week. I think it is certainly a first: when an ex-LTTE fighter decides to writes honestly about the reason why she decided to become a rebel and why she decided to leave. The book is interesting because of the interaction the author has with key rebel leadership while recounting the experiences of the rank and file. She also paints vivid images of 1980s Jaffna, the hardship faced by the civilian population, and the gnawing doubts she begins to have about not so much the end but the means to the end. I highly recommend it for anyone who is interested in the Sri Lankan story and wishes to understand it better in a different way - and the fact that it is actually quite well written is a definite bonus!
