An easy-to-follow series of walk leaflets,
This review is from: Tameside Trail: A 65km (40 Mile) Circular Walk Through the Countryside of Tameside on the Edge of the Pennines (Loose Leaf)
My girlfriend and I walked the Tameside Trail (a 40-mile walk around the borough of Tameside on the eastern edge of Manchester) in 3 days in September 2001. The pack consists of 26 separate double-sided sheets in a cardboard folder, each covering a stage of a mile or so. On one side is a map of the stage and a set of brief but adequate route instructions; on the other are black-and-white photographs and details of places of interest on that stage. In addition there's an overall sheet showing the whole route. As a published writer of walking guides, I found the Tameside Trail leaflets clear and easy to follow. The pack was published in 1994 (before the completion of the M60!) and therefore is a bit out-of-date in a few places - but not so dated that the route cannot be followed perfectly easily. My only criticisms would be (a) there is little or no logistical information apart from brief notes on public transport: accommodation possibilities, pubs, shops, places to eat and so on are not covered (though such information would inevitably date quite quickly) and (b) details of mileage for each stage, and the overall distance walked so far, would have been appreciated. As for the Trail itself, this was our first "long-distance" walk, and we enjoyed the challenge, the sense of an ongoing journey and the variety of urban and rural landscapes the route passes through (though some of the built-up stretches were rather dull going - a fact freely admitted in the route details). If you like walking and industrial history you'll enjoy the Tameside Trail.
