Product Description

Review

Sondorgo, from Hungary, are a real discovery. Their music sparkles with virtuosity and foot-tapping joi de vivre. They play the tambura music of the Serbian and Croatian commnities who have settled along the Danube for 500 years now. The tambura - halfway beween a bazouki and a mandolin - is an agile instrument that seems to dance as it's played and Sondorgo play with speed and precision. They are largely a family band of three brothers and a cousin from the Eredics family, plus a bassist. They are joined on this album by Jozsef Kovacs, a great Gypsy tambura player from the south of Hungary, and the brilliant singer Katya Tompos. --Simon Broughton, Evening Standard

The music of the Balkans has been popularised by bands who make use of violins, accordion or brass, but Söndörg aim to add the tambura to that list. It's a fretted instrument played with a plectrum and it exists in several different forms, from the small version used for lead work through to the far larger bass. Tambura bands were once popular across the region, and these Hungarian Serbs from north of Budapest hope to re-establish the instrument with their often rapid-fire playing, showing its potential with dance songs and brooding instrumentals. There are some fine performances here especially when the band are joined by the virtuoso József Kovács for Serbian Gypsy songs but the best tracks are those where the light, rippling tambura is matched against voices, accordion or brass. There are two almost painfully passionate contributions from Gypsy singer Antal Kovács, and a couple of magnificent and dramatic songs from the Hungarian actor Kátya Tompos, who is joined on the exquisite Zajdi Zajdi by flute and clarinet. When she sings, Söndörg sound like a world-class band. --Robin Denselow, Guradian.co.uk
