5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet small gadget with lots or replay value!, 13 Feb 2009
By Vale (I'm in lowestoft!) - See all my reviews
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
I used to have millions of these when I was kid. (Not the proper Bandai Tamagotchi but who's counting?)
I never could get enough of them. And now, I'm 18 years old, and I still find them addicting.

A Tamagotchi is a fun yet quirky little device with a LCD screen. Don't start thinking that it has the same quality and game play as a PC video game with tons of features but it always has its little surprises every now and then which you have never noticed before (cool! My Tamagotchi is taking a shower!).
It may seem dull and uninteresting but it does amaze kids who are unaware of the many amazing things that a Tamagotchi could surprise you with, which is a key factor if you want your kids spending their valuable studying time playing on that dang digivice you bought them last Christmas (A key factor for any toy to get exact).

I must say that the replay value for any Tamagotchi is quite high because of the Tamagotchi characters you can care for, which you will eventually obtain as the days go on, because these are not normal animals for the sole reason that these cute little critters transform to a different creature, depending on how you took care of it during that stage of its life.
From the start you can only play one game and you are not able to use many of the items you can buy with the money you earn when you play the games.
All of the Tamagotchi has 5 growth stages, and each stage you go though, the more games and items you unlock. It starts off slow, so if your kids don't have enough or any patience at all, just turn around and leave, forget the toy ever existed or you will never hear the end of it.

Its fun to experiment on which Tamagotchi you can get by; feeding it to much or neglecting it for days on end. The outcomes are always surprising, well usually it is. I mean it does have its limitations, however it does expand its characters and items that you could buy in every new version but I digress.

One of the most interesting new functions that the modern Tamagotchi V4 has is a sensor that can connect to other Tamagotchi V4 and all of the other past versions, except the origianl 90s models.
You can also log on the internet website and win lots Tama points but that website is clearly made for youngsters. The games were too straightforward, no real challenge in earning your items. So if you're older than 7 years of age, don't bother.

Now I know what most parents' first impressions on synthetic virtual key chains would be.
"How could a child let alone an 18 year old be interested in a piece of plastic that's just going to left around bleeping randomly at any given minute."
Kids were crazy for these Tamagotchi since 10 years ago and they are still on the selves selling more than a dozen a day, surprisingly enough. And my parents just thought it was some childish fad like Pokémon. God did they hate them (and Pokémon) but as long as it kept me happy, so be it.

Don't let the target audience put you off, because they are quite absorbing for a children's toy.

Now I am rambling so I'll just get to the point. It's a harmless cute little small virtual pet that became ever so popular during it's first release and still amazingly popular now and best of all, they can tag along with you where ever you go, apart from school... and college...

Teachers despise them.
