More About the Author

I'm a children's writer based in Scotland, and most of my fiction is inspired by the Scottish landscape and local legends. I love writing fantasy adventures for 8 - 12 year olds, but I also love creating stories for other age groups. I've written several picture books, including one about bottoms (which I enjoy reading to infant classes!) and a recent retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, with gorgeous pictures by Celia Chauffrey. I've written retellings of myths for slightly older readers, and a contemporary novella called Drawing a Veil. Maze Running, the fourth and final novel in my First Aid for Fairies series, has just been published, so I'm now looking round eagerly for the next novel idea.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Alastair Mciver on 20 Sep 2011
Format: Paperback
As a storyteller who has brought Burns's most famous tale to life, adapting it to suit audiences of all ages and abilities, I can really appreciate what Lari Don has done here, in rendering the story accessable in language suitable for people who find reading harder.

It is the very simplicity of the language that renders Lari's unflinching look at the ghastly elements so striking - eyeballs and entrails abound! Though never unsuitable for the 8+ age group, this is certainly not a read for the fainthearted! Perhaps by torchlight at a Hallowe'en party is the best setting to read this aloud!

I am an enthusiast of this tale, and long may it be retold and re-retold in infinite incarnations! I am proud to have visited Kirk Alloway and clippy-clopped away on my imaginary horse, and to anyone who has sympathy with such an act, I recommend this book!
