5.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful. 29 Jun 2008
Format:Audio CD
Another of my favourite CDs! Oxford Camerata thoroughly do justice to Tallis's works with their harmonious blend of voices and expressive interpretation. The accompanying booklet also gives the texts and translations for the pieces, which will please many listeners. This is a bargain of a CD and a "must" for anyone interested in early music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music to amaze 22 Mar 2009
By Polly
Format:Audio CD
I rarely listen to choral music, but Spem in Alium takes one's breath away, showing Tallis's mastery of composing for the human voice. One listens and one wonders when on earth the singers breathe! But they do!
Listen to this music, listen in wonder at an orchestra of voices, and remember that it was written over four hundred years ago.
As our American cousins would say, "Awesome" This time they are right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rough with the smooth 24 Oct 2010
Format:Audio CD
I cannot recommend anyone buys this CD for the 'Spem in Alium', which sounds as though the choir was bunged together (which indeed it was, as the booklet tells us), and the female voices are heaving at the high notes (isn't this a job for the boys?). I recommend you go for the veteran version by David Wulstan and the Clerkes of Oxenford if you can afford it.
But you can safely buy it for the 'Misse Salva' and other pieces, which are sublime. You'll lose your sense of time, lose yourself in their poised beauty. This is what Tallis is all about!

4.0 out of 5 stars Baltic
Heard this on 40 speakers set up in the Baltic in Gateshead and it was subliminal. Unfortunately it doesn't quite have the same effect on my old, but quality, 80's hi-fi! Read more

Sorry, but the constant spitting noise (tschss tschss) just puts me off. Beautiful music yes, but an annoying CD to listen to (especially on headphones).

This is a good recording of early English choral work. As such it is one of the high points of Elizabethan English culture. Read more
