Book Description

Out for a day’s adventure exploring the dry bed of Lake Travis in Austin, Texas, two young boys stumble upon a skeleton. It might be all that remains of a fugitive named Randy Bear Heart. Wanted for robbing three banks and killing three cops, Bear Heart was never brought to justice.

The FBI is called on to determine how the outlaw avoided arrest for twenty-five years and who put him in the lake wearing chains. The BIA — Bureau of Indian Affairs — gets the very same job. Special Agent John Tall Wolf is put on the case because one of the dead cops was a Native American who worked at the Mercy Ridge Reservation.

The FBI wants John to “coordinate all your efforts” through SAC Gilbert Melvin. John is having none of that, saying, “I’ll conduct my investigation as I see fit.” He doesn’t even get along with his own boss, Marlene Flower Moon, head of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services.

While interviewing John for his job, Marlene was amused by his assertiveness, and asked him, “What do you want, a license to take scalps?” John said, “Yeah, that’d be good.”

More About the Author

Joseph Flynn was on his way to his first day of university classes with the intention of becoming a lawyer when he got the idea for his first short story, Lester's Curse. From that point forward, the ideas just kept coming. Needing to earn a living from his writing, he started out in advertising, working for such major agencies as Foote, Cone & Belding, Chicago; J. Walter Thompson, Chicago; Doyle Dane Bernbach, Honolulu and W.B. Doner, Los Angeles.

While living in L.A., Mr. Flynn wrote a number of screenplays, one of which, Comrades, was optioned by 20th Century Fox. Giving up on the glitter of Tinseltown, he turned to his first literary love, the novel.

Mr. Flynn's novels have been published by Signet Books: The Concrete Inquisition; Bantam Books: Digger and The Next President; Variance Publishing: The President's Henchman and other titles by his own imprint, Stray Dog Press, Inc.

Booklist has said of his work, "Flynn is an excellent storyteller." The Denver Post said of Digger, "A mystery cloaked as cleverly as (and perhaps better than) any John Grisham work." ForeWord Magazine said of The President's Henchman, "Marvelously entertaining."

Similarly, Mr. Flynn describes his work as smart entertainment, though occasionally there are those who would disagree with one or both halves of that characterization. He writes in a language somewhat similar to your own, about people the likes of which you may or may not recognize, using spellings that may seem familiar but are not quite on the mark.

Upon reflection, had he known how well John Grisham was going to do, he might have gone to law school anyway.

A detective story with a difference. This was a very enjoyable read . John tall wolf is one very laid back detective. Very likeable hero who always seems to be one step ahead of the game . There is a thread of cultural humour referring to the coyote, throughout the book. Very much Looking forward to the second book.
