I can't understand why so many people seem to hate this film. Of course, what one person likes another might not like. But the ratings on IMDb seem to belong to another movie.
"Tall headlines" is about a family, of which the eldest son Ronnie has been hanged for murder. What follows is how this affects the lives of the other members of the family. They move away from their hometown to start a new life elsewhere, even changing their name in trying to hide their dark secret, thinking people might brand them if they would know they were related to the killer that filled the newspaper headlines for months.
It turns out the past can't be locked away in a corner of the mind, and soon all members of the family, except for perhaps the mother (brilliantly played by Flora Robson), become emotionally stressed and turn out not to be any better than the people whom they thought would brand them, when they display major, unfounded prejudices towards the girlfriend of the son Philip.
A conclusion of the film is, that often that what we think other people think of us, is a product of our own minds.
A great film, recommended to anyone who likes good (psycological) drama. The transfer on the DVD is not the best you've ever seen, but very acceptable. A better version we'll probably never see because it doesn't excist.
