Product Description

A dramatic British film of a family torn apart by their eldest son being hanged for the murder of a young girl. George and Mary Rackham (Andre Morell and Flora Robson) try to erase the memory of their eldest son Ronnie and the ghoulish attention of neighbours by moving away from their family home and changing the family name. However, their children, Philip (Michael Dennison) and Frankie (Jane Hylton), struggle to adapt to normal family life without their executed brother. When Philip falls in love with the blonde temptress, Doris (Mai Zetterling), he begins to imagine that his dead brother has returned and fears for his own sanity. Rejected by his sister for falling in love with a girl who is identical to the cheap hussy who led Ronnie astray, Philip begins to fear that the murderous instinct that possessed Ronnie, is also within his veins... Starring: Andre Morell, Flora Robson, Michael Denison and Jane Hylton Director: Terrance Young Date of Release: 1952

Slow but sure... 18 Nov 2008
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Tall Headlines is a slow moving character study made in 1951 and filmed at the Nettlefold Studios and on location including at Saltdene.
The sombre mood perhaps reflects the mood after WWII and yet this was a time when the country was focused on renewing itself through such projects as the Festival of Britain. The film is interesting for its image of family life and yet one hopes that the dominant father played by Andre Morell was not a feature of every home. Flora Robson plays the mother and is well case opposite Morell.
The cast is good with many well known names but interestingly most are theatre rather than film actors (often the case when appearing in a feature was fitted in between weekly Rep, provincial tours or West End plays). The only thing that stretches belief is the casting of the children as surely both Michael Denison and Jane Hylton were far too old to be still receiving parental guidance. Look out for prolific small part actress Marianne Stone at the dentists. Dennis Price a big name at the time once more features in a relatively small role as does Mervyn Johns (both well known to filmgoers).
However, this is a rare entry to Odeon Entertainment DVDs and will no doubt find favour with film collectors. The print and sound are clear and the original distributor was Grand National.

Lovely film 23 Mar 2011
I can't understand why so many people seem to hate this film. Of course, what one person likes another might not like. But the ratings on IMDb seem to belong to another movie.

"Tall headlines" is about a family, of which the eldest son Ronnie has been hanged for murder. What follows is how this affects the lives of the other members of the family. They move away from their hometown to start a new life elsewhere, even changing their name in trying to hide their dark secret, thinking people might brand them if they would know they were related to the killer that filled the newspaper headlines for months.

It turns out the past can't be locked away in a corner of the mind, and soon all members of the family, except for perhaps the mother (brilliantly played by Flora Robson), become emotionally stressed and turn out not to be any better than the people whom they thought would brand them, when they display major, unfounded prejudices towards the girlfriend of the son Philip.

A conclusion of the film is, that often that what we think other people think of us, is a product of our own minds.

A great film, recommended to anyone who likes good (psycological) drama. The transfer on the DVD is not the best you've ever seen, but very acceptable. A better version we'll probably never see because it doesn't excist.

I had personal reasons for wanting to buy this DVD so the quality of the film was irrelevant to me. I was delighted that Odeon had produced it and Amazon was selling it. I had been looking for it for about 40 years.
Anyway, the film itself is a rarity but if anyone thinks that this is a lost classic - think again.
Could be the worst British film ever made. As a small point of interest Sid James makes an appearance but blink and you'll miss him.
Another small point of interest, although the film is slated in IMDB I think they comment that the director went on to win an Oscar (for another film of course)
