Synopsis
George and Mary Rackham's son Ronnie was found guilty of murdering a young girl and subsequently hanged. In an effort to escape the stigma of their son's actions, the couple and their remaining children move away from the family home and change their name. But their dark past proves hard to shake off, and soon their son Phillip finds himself heading down a path eerily similar to Ronnie's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow but sure..., 18 Nov 2008

Tall Headlines is a slow moving character study made in 1951 and filmed at the Nettlefold Studios and on location including at Saltdene.
The sombre mood perhaps reflects the mood after WWII and yet this was a time when the country was focused on renewing itself through such projects as the Festival of Britain. The film is interesting for its image of family life and yet one hopes that the dominant father played by Andre Morell was not a feature of every home. Flora Robson plays the mother and is well case opposite Morell.
The cast is good with many well known names but interestingly most are theatre rather than film actors (often the case when appearing in a feature was fitted in between weekly Rep, provincial tours or West End plays). The only thing that stretches belief is the casting of the children as surely both Michael Denison and Jane Hylton were far too old to be still receiving parental guidance. Look out for prolific small part actress Marianne Stone at the dentists. Dennis Price a big name at the time once more features in a relatively small role as does Mervyn Johns (both well known to filmgoers).
However, this is a rare entry to Odeon Entertainment DVDs and will no doubt find favour with film collectors. The print and sound are clear and the original distributor was Grand National.
