4.0 out of 5 stars Basic, but enough to get by 13 Aug. 2012
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
You get a CD with the conversations already in MP3 format to transfer to your MP3 player and a thin 10 page introduction booklet; you can download a 37 page coursebook in pdf format from the website once you've registered ( this could easily have been put on the CD).
This is beginner level and the lessons are split over 10 days. Lessons include introducing yourself, booking a room, restaurant etc and are introduced in English with the French conversation following; I found the French conversations were particularly clear recordings which is helpful when you are learning a language.
The coursebook is very useful in that it expands on the lessons with the conversation scripts, extra vocabulary and tests.
Overall a good starting point for learning French and ideal for anyone on a short break or holiday in France.

5.0 out of 5 stars bonne journée 24 Aug. 2012

A very simple, but very clear, introduction to French Language.
How to say hello, I'm single, I'm an architect, to talking about the weather, ordering in a chemist etc.

It's very clear, well constructed, and gives some basics that will be necessary if visiting France.

For the price it's really good value.

It won't work in a standard CD player unless it's capable of playing MP3 tracks. It does recommend putting the tracks on iTunes or an equivalent.

No, it's a really good introduction. Once you've mastered this then it is possible to move on to additional levels Get Talking and Keep Talking French Pack

4.0 out of 5 stars Ten day intro French course 10 Oct. 2012
By Uncle Barbar TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Yes this course is very basic. It's only really useful for someone who has never really tried French or had a very basic grasp many years ago at school and needs a complete refresh.

There really is not a hueg amount to get your teeth into and it is really only useful for those who are just going to have a day or weekend trip to France and don't want to get too involved. That said what is here is clear and concise and you get a pretty good grounding in the very basics. Whether it is basic introductions to people, booking and checking into hotels or restaurants, meeting friends or going to a chemist's. The problem I've always had is not with what I ask - they understand me ok - but then they come back with something I am not expecting. That just comes with many more hours of practise with more advanced courses than this though!

For anyone who wants to go further I really can recommend the Michel Thomas CDs - they really are excellent in ANY of the languages he does (or did he died a couple of years ago)

For those who want a very basic start to see how they will get on with French and help them through a day trip or two - then this is probably ideal - particularly at this price!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good resource for beginners French. 20 Sept. 2012
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The teach yourself series has a 70 year track record of success with language learners, this French beginners edition is no exception. It is very simple and elementary in its structure. With a 10 day approach for language and vocabulary building using commonly encountered situations in everyday life.It comes with a travel phrase book that is divided into 10 day chapters as follows:
Day 1- Introducing yourself
Day 2- Booking a room
Day 3- Checking into a hotel
Day 4- Asking directions
Day 5- Getting in touch with an old friend
Day 6- Meeting an old friend for Coffee
Day 7 -Booking a table at a restaurant
Day 8-Arriving at a restaurant for Dinner
Day 9-Ordering a meal
Day 10- Getting to the chemist
It is user friendly and the cd rom is interactive allowing for consolidation and repetitive use as well as role playing. The audio files are downloadable onto an MP3 player and the cd can be played in an mp3 compatible CD player. One of the best features is that you can download a free course book to practice the reading and writing from the website [...]. My French was quite rusty and I had started relearning a little while ago, it was good to test myself with the basics in this cd-rom and book to see how far I have come.It was enjoyable and fun to use and it has so much scope for practice and learning that you will really be speaking French in 10 days, at least basic French.I heartily recommend it. It is a very good tool for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Talking French 24 Aug. 2012
Format:Audio CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This product is a beginners guide to speaking practical French phrases, good if you was going on holiday and wanted some confidence with the language.

I studied French in school, but it has been over seven years since I really spoke it and have never been to France to practice what I'd learned. I wanted something that was fairly simple to reintroduce me to the language, which this has done. I don't however feel that this is quite the right product for me and in hindsight, would prefer something more interactive. This mp3 CD however was good to put on in the background whilst I was on my computer, with myself repeating the phrases. It has a lot of questions that get you thinking about what you have learned and in what situations to use them. It is best if you look at the words whilst listening however, as then you learn how to pronounce words that you read.

A little gripe however is that each track is quite short and it is always telling you which track you are on. Since this is designed to be played in a PC or mp3 player, most of which will tell you a track number I found this information a bit odd. I also don't understand why the coursebook (that goes through the questions present on the CD) isn't on the CD, or better yet already printed out for you. The phrase-book is a rather simple dumbed down version of this document and the extra words present in the pdf would have made a better phrase book for carrying around with you. I guess if you have something like a tablet this wont be much of an issue for you however.

All in all this is a good cheap introduction to French, for further training however I think I will go to different sources.
