Review

'Man's answer to the Vagina Monologues' The Guardian 'Richard Herring's male answer to the Vagina Monologues is... an impassioned and thoughtful disquisition on masculinity, cultural identity and sexual anthropology. But don't let that put you off; there are still lots of jokes about porridge guns and weeing.' The Observer.

Product Description

It has been known by many different names to many different people: knob, dick, schmuck, tool, percy, John Thomas, the bald headed mouse, the yoghurt-spitting sausage, the sperm javelin, the sentimental teaser, the crimson butterfly...It inspires lust, fear, awe and laughter. And yet, it is an object of shame and when engorged, indecency. It can be a pound of flesh or an ounce of winkles. It can be used to express both love and hate. It can create life. It can condemn us to death...And it can do wees as well. How can one little flap of sponge and sinew be all these things? You will be surprised how little you know about the skin chimney, because although men may constantly brag and exaggerate about their little chap, they rarely talk about their feelings for it. At last, Richard Herring reveals the truth about man and his manhood in the 21st century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest thing I've read in ages, 14 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Talking Cock (Paperback)
I don't know what book the previous reviewer had read (if any) but I thought this was one of the finest books I have read in a long time. It is a moving and honest look at a sensitive subject, which also manages to be extremely funny. It proves that you can write about what could be a delicate area (pun intended) without being po-faced or going over the top. I'd recommend this book to anyone, whether or not they possess the part in question. Above all, it made me laugh out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now let this book be praised, 21 Oct 2003

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Talking Cock (Paperback)
A mature and balanced look at the huge sphere of myths, emotion, varied social standings, science and humour surrounding the penis.

Whilst dealing with subject matter that is still viewed by many as 'naughty' or taboo, Herring pulls off a mighty tour de force, combining genuine laugh-out-loud humour with insightful and provocative writing. The humour is ever present, an irrepressible spoonful of sugar that binds the book together and makes you smirk and laugh, even when dealing with such sensitive and serious subjects as circumcision and erectile dysfunction.

While there is still so much stigma attached to sex and the genitals, Herring provides a much-needed battle cry of 'Lighten up!'

Cracking stuff. Buy this if you have a penis, if you know someone who has, or even if you're just thinking of getting one and haven't quite decided yet.

More please.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, 20 Oct 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Talking Cock (Paperback)
Talking Cock avoids the obvious traps of juvenile toilet humour to deliver a serious, but never somber discussion of what it means to be a man in modern society. The fact that this is viewed not only from the perspective of straight men, but also gay men, women and even lesbians makes the book full of interesting new ideas no matter who you are. If approached with an open mind the reader will find many firmly held preconceptions challenged. It is also very funny, but the jokes are never cruel. This book should be recommended reading for anyone.
