Book Description

20 July 2006 Talkabout
A valuable resource for anyone using the 'Talkabout' series, this video brings social skills to life! Contains acted scenarios for each skill being taught, modelling both poor and good behaviour. Uses a number of settings and different ages, and includes an instruction booklet on how to use the video in conjunction with 'Talkabout'. Essential for situations where there is only one group facilitator and therefore difficulty in modelling poor and good behaviour. This DVD-resource is a must-have for anyone using the 'Talkabout' books, teaching social skills or working with people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, learning disabilities or social communication disorders.

Product Description

'A dream to use and will breathe new life into social skills groups, particularly where having only one facilitator restricts role playing. … I strongly recommend it for work with people with autistic spectrum conditions, learning disabilities, or emotional and behavioural difficulties.' --Speech & Language Therapy in Practice

I haven't gone through this full DVD yet. It is intended for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, communication difficulties or learning difficulties. However, I got it so that I could use it in SPHE classes. I thought that it would be a good idea for the children to see the different scenarios so that they could discuss them. I found that some of it was quite stilted because the characters had to demonstrate the scene without background music or other noises that you might have in a normal situation. As well as that some of the body language/voices are exaggerated. I would be using this DVD with children who do not have Learning Difficulties as well as with children who do so for them I would have to tell them in advance that it is quite stilted in order to avoid sniggering.

However, I think this DVD would be a good starting point for the children because it plays through the scene but then you can discuss each character's behaviour. As well as that there are examples of good and bad body language. There are examples of different types of intonation, rate, volume, expression, etc. There are also examples of people being assertive and different types of conversations. The accompanying book is very helpful because it gives a synopsis of the different scenarios and gives talking points which can be discussed.

I would definitely use this DVD as a starting point in a class but I'd say I would then use scenes from films to reinforce the point in a more natural way so that it would round it off for the children who do not have learning difficulties. I would hope that this would also help the children will difficulties.
