I hadn't heard of Fiona Bevan prior to seeing her as support to the fantastic Gwyneth Herbert last year. Fiona opened her set with a couple of quirky songs full of word play and humour. I was enthralled by her songs and breathy vocals. Suddenly, alarms sounded, the lights came on and we were all left wondering if it was performance art. The truth was that in another part of the building Sweet and Slade's (I kid you not) opening pyrotechnics had tripped the fire alarm! Post evacuation standing in the rain we settled down once more. Gwyneth came on and re-introduced Fiona who gamely carried on and received well earned applause.
Fiona came back as part of Gwyneth's band performing The Sea Cabinet and, I later learnt, had co-wrote two of the songs. Once home I looked on Amazon for her recordings and was dismayed to hear that her album would not be released until May 2014.
However, Talk to Strangers is now with us and well worth a listen. All the songs are self penned and varied with superb production. Fiona's vocals are extraordinarly intimate at times as if she is in the room. Musicianship is faultless with Fiona playing a wide variety of instruments herself.
Highly recommended.

This is a simply magical debut. One of the loveliest to have passed through
my ears in a year of yellow moons. Fiona Bevan seems to have sprung
fully-formed out of nowhere. There is an extraordinary confidence in the
structure and melodies of these twelve songs and that's before you get to
the part where you learn that she plays a good many of the instruments in
the mix both proficiently and imaginatively. Then there's the voice. I'm happy
to admit without the faintest trace of a blush that I have fallen head over heels
in love with it! Her light vibrato won't be to everybody's taste but it inhabits
these wonderful inventions with a joyous sense of fleet-footed abandon.

From the punchy opening track 'Rebel Without A Cause' and the delightfully
jaunty 'Sio Mo Tiger Gio'; through the darker-toned 'Time Machine' and
bitter-sweet 'Dial D For Denial'; the enchanting jazzy luminosity of 'Monsoon
Sundance' and the sublimely weird and wonderful drama of final number 'Last Days
Of Decadence', Ms Bevan never once comes even close to dropping a stitch.

If I sound excited it's because I am! I'm prepared to beg to get you to hear it.

Essential.
