The program is very easy to use and you definitely feel like you're getting somewhere with it. Although the games are a little uninspired, it gives you enough variation to practice without getting bored. However, this is for absolute beginners and I wouldn't expect to be able to get by speaking French without further help. The phrases are good to know but useless unless you can understand the answer, and the words are useful but, again, not much use unless you can put them in context. A good foundation, but not much more than that.

My kids love this CD, they are 5 and 7 and do not learn french at school so before our holiday in Normandy this year I was keen to teach them basics. They loved the games and trying to beat each other scores, but best of all learnt words and phases quickly and had the confidence to show off when we were in restaurants and ordered their own food. Great for kids and the basics if you have no knowledge of the language or need a refreshers course.
I am a fan of the Talk Now series - and have found it useful to get the basics in Greek and Spanish.
I bought the French one to help my children with their French for school - and I've been delighted how well they have taken to this. My youngest is 7, and even he was able to score well on the colours and numbers fairly quickly. The games are reasonably entertaining, and there is a bit of a race on to be the first to get the bronze award.
This does just cover the basics, colours, numbers, time, first words, common phrases, food, shopping, countries and parts of the body. For each topic, there are four games, two easy ones, and two hard. I find that the hard games make you return again to topics, and help to cement the words. It is just basic vocabulary, but it can help make a positive start in learning the language.
