This is an excellent choice for the beginner learning mandarin. The exercises it offers are enjoyable to learn and the voice training really helps mastering pronounciation. It does not overwhelm you with complexity and the menu interface is very user friendly. It is purely for beginers so I would not recommend to someone who has a moderate understanding of the language.

This is a CD-ROM that is divided into different sections, eacht providing words and games. They are: parts of the body, numbers, colours, food, shopping, telling time etc. In each section you can first learn the words and then practice them through games with increasing level of difficulty. A disadvantage is that the words are only shown in Chinese characters and not in a Pinyin transcription. Nevertheless it is a helpful practice for beginners.

Learning mandarin Chinese by Euro-Talk is a CD-ROM aimed for those wishing to learn Chinese from scratch. It's easy to install and the screen menus are easy to navigate. The program is divided into sections that teach you the sounds for greetings, numbers, hotel booking, body parts etc. Although the questions to everyday problems are taught, the responses that you might expect a Chinese person to make aren't covered.

The CD-ROM format unlike tapes allows you to quickly jump to the words you want to learn and repeat those words time and time again at the click of a button. A major drawback is the lack of written Chinese - only sounds and pictures are shown for each phrase to be learnt. Having the Chinese words and phrases written in the familiar Western alphabet would have been a tremendous help since common sounds and words in phrases would been easily identified. The lack of written words is a major disadvantage to this product.

If you're looking to learn a few Chinese phrases for fun this product maybe for you but if you're looking to learn to speak Chinese this product won't take you beyond a basic level.
