Talk Japanese is the ideal course for absolute beginners. Designed for adults learning at home or in a class, it covers all the basic language you’ll need in everyday situations, so you can make the most of your visit from the moment you arrive!

Talk Japanese’s rewarding step-by-step approach makes progress rapid and is effective in teaching even the least confident of language learners. It makes the language more accessible by presenting it using the Roman alphabet, but you will also learn to recognise some common signs in the Japanese writing system. Packed with enjoyable activities, it’s fun too!

The native speakers on the audio will give you a real flavour of the Japanese you’re likely to hear – and you’re encouraged to join in and put your new-found language skills to the test!

This pack contains a 128-page course book and two 60-minute audio CDs. The book is also available separately (9780563520306).

4.0 out of 5 stars A good starter course in Japanese 2 Dec 2001
I have been using this book as a core part of my Japanese class for beginners. As a tutor, I was pleased to find that the information is presented in small, easy to understand segments, which focus strongly on situational conversation, so it's great for the beginner. Vocabulary is learnt easily, and students quickly become more confident.
The units in the book include such topics as; introducing yourself, eating and drinking, shopping, finding your way around, and booking hotel rooms. There are ten units in total plus three revision sections.
All my classes have commented on how helpful the tapes are, and due to the situational approach of the course, it is easy to introduce extension work and additional vocabulary relevant to each scenario in the text. One downside however, is that the vocabulary in the book itself is very limited, and in order to learn more by yourself you would possibly need to carry on after finishing this book with another beginners text, which involves covering some of the same material twice.
However, this is a great little starter course to gently introduce learners to Japanese, with no scary grammar (just some of the essentials), and all written in romanization, so learners do not need to be able to read any Japanese. A very good buy if you are considering learning some basic Japanese for travel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does exactly what it says on the cover 25 Nov 2003
Before going to Japan for the first time, I picked up this book to give me some pointers (at the very least I wanted to say 'please' and 'thank you' and 'excuse me, do you speak English?').
Naturally, you can get books like 'Japanese For Busy People' which will give you a much more thorough grounding for susequent study, but if you only have a couple of months and just want to hit the ground running in Japan, then 'Talk Japanese' is GREAT! Easy to follow, nice digestible bite sized 'lessons', relevant dialogue you can instantly use. I was able to make full use of my extremely limited Japanese. Don't be fooled into thinking that everybody in Japan speaks English. My experience has found that a little Japanese goes a very long way, everybody seems delighted with the fact that you've made the effort.
'Talk Japanese' works. As an introduction to the language, I haven't found anything better.
Anyway, I've raved about this publication to other friends who have gone to Japan and they've also enjoyed it. I hope you do too. (And even if you only get half way through the book, you'll still have enough Japanese to manage most things with)

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover 22 Aug 2004
I used this book (and accompanying tape) for my first trip to Japan. As a taster, I found it very easy to use and incredibly useful.
I must stress that this is a 'visitor's' language book - it gets you talking. It's not a foundation for serious academic study.
The best thing is that (for me at least) when I visited Japan that first time, everybody I spoke to was incredibly patient with me. I was able to use everything I had learnt - and that of course,is supremely gratifying.
I have now embarked on W. Heisig's 'Remembering the Kanji' course (vol. 1) and will proceed this way before I begin my formal studies of Japanese - incidentally, THIS course is the most extraordinary book I've ever read or used.
But if you just want to learn a few words - Talk Japanese will do you very well, and isn't in the least intimidating - even if you only get half way through, you'll still get a lot of satisfaction from it.
Gambatte kudasai!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough! 1 Jun 2009
After buying this book and cd, I was unsure whether it would be of a great standard and if it was going to cover topics that were worth using, but it turns out that it does. It covers greetings, nationality, metting friends, what to say when booking hotel etc. It really does cover every basic thing you would need to say when going on a visit to Japan.

This book and cd also contains activities to do which shows your progress and lets you know if you have really understood and remembered it as well as you think you did. At the end of each unit there is also a quiz and this really outs you to the test. I love this about the book and I feel that it is really helping me learn Japanese.

Overall, this is probably the best pack you could buy to learn. It it thorough, easy to learn, contains activities and includes how to write in Japanese also. Buy Buy Buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful. 27 Jun 2007
This short course is ideal if you are planning on visiting Japan, or just want to learn some useful, everyday Japanese.

The simple, and essential key phrases are great for allowing you to speak comfortably in everyday situations in Japan, without the trouble of hoping they will speak English.

Pronounciation is important, and is easily delt with on audio, making sure you speak it correctly.

It has 10 Units, each consisting of a review exercises to summarize what you have learnt.

Strongly reccomened.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent language companion 15 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I opted for this as it has 2 audio CD's and I have previously found success with the Talk Spanish course.
I listen to the audio in my car on the way to work and it has helped me pick up the basics almost subliminaly. The book goes into a bit more depth and the 2 work together well - espescially if you are disciplined enough to sith there with the book and listen to audio at the same time.
Some of the topics are a bit irrelevant and you are sometimes required to run before you can walk, but overall it is not too much of a problem.
Great value compared to the others and it is guaranteed to get you by.

It seems to be a nice additional learning tool:) It is bit less text than I had expected when I viewed it on Amazon, which is why I'd say I like, not love, it!
