Very Good, but has a few problems, 17 July 2006
This review is from: Talex TAL-04-101 - Speed Camera Detector (Electronics)
Having purchased my Talex, I was very impressed, especially as it costs very little compared to the new Road Angel. It did everything I wanted, and it educated me about my local 'Possible Mobile Sites'.
I have a Athermic Heat Reflective windscreen and the Talex proved to be inconsistent, giving erratic readings, so I bought a screen mounting kit and positioned it in the non-reflective area above my rear view mirror - it now works a treat....! the signal is now perfect, tracking 8-9 satellites and giving an excellent signal.
However after living with the Talex for a few weeks, I have discovered that it does not give the correct compass reading, and it does not give the correct Altitude. In fact my altitude reading reads 60 metres at sea level (at the beach), it also reads 40 degrees out on the compass (i have tested both these issues against my portable altimeter, Ordinance Survey Map, and compass). I am still waiting for Talex Tech Support to email me back.......!!!!!
my main gripe is the practicality of the device. At 30Mph, the Talex is excellent(nice and clear warnings), and at 50Mph it is great; however, at 70Mph it is difficult to hear the Talex unit warning you about the mobile speed camera site.... It is so bad, I have to drive on the motorway with my Radio off - it is the only way I can just about hear the Talex unit warning me. If you switch the radio on (with a low volume), you cannot hear the Talex! In fact, you can forget having your music on, the Talex will not be loud enough, even with the Talex volume turned up to 'Max'.
For the price.... It's a very good purchase, but be warned, you do get what you pay for.
Yet the camera database is excellent - 99% accurate.
Instruction manual..... errr! umm! not the best (but it's so simple to use, you won't need the manual)

Talex Speed Camera Detector, 16 Dec 2005
This review is from: Talex TAL-04-101 - Speed Camera Detector (Electronics)
What a brilliant piece of kit! It warns you when you're coming up to a speed camera, or the possible site of a mobile camera & tells you what the speed limit it. There's a visual symbol which counts down as you get closer to the camera & if you're still speeding it warns you to slow down. Once you pass the camera a tone tells you. On top of that, it constantly tells you what speed you're travelling at, we now know how innacurate our car speedo is!! On top of *that* it tells you what direction your travelling in (so you know if you're going roughly the right way). On top of that, it'll tell you what the time is and where you are as a measurement of longitude & latitude! On top of that, it tells you when you're near a school, but *only* on school days! You can turn off that feature if you want. You have to update the Talex regularly, via the internet, but it's easy to do via the USB connection. It's not a detector as such, as it doesn't actually detect the cameras. What it does is it knows where you are in relation to the cameras on it's database. I heard that the ones that detect cameras could be made illegal, but the because of the way that Talex works, it means that it'll stay legal. Not only is the unit cheaper than anything else I've seen, but the annual subscription is cheaper too! If you want a cost effective way of saving points on your licence - this is it!

Worth every penny and your licence., 1 May 2006
This review is from: Talex TAL-04-101 - Speed Camera Detector (Electronics)
I was a bit apprehensive in buying a speed detector, after hearing so many bad reports about other makes giving false alarms etc.
But after reading about them in a motor magazine and this particular model (Talex) was giving 5 stars, so I decided to go for it. Lucky I was at the Peterborough Truck fest and the company who sells these devices had a good offer on. They explained to me how to set the device up and how to use the website to up date the software.
The area I live in is bad for mobile speed camera's etc and my job involves a lot of travelling. Once I open the box, and read the instructions and rigged the device to the top of the dash board. The device went into its own diagnostic mode, which only took 5-10 minutes, and then the correct time was displayed.
I went about my daily business and the device detected, fixed speed cameras and mobile camera's with no problem. I was amazed where the mobile speed cameras where hiding. Well worth the price and not a speeding fine and points.
It gave clear warnings, well before the speed cameras came up and even informed of the correct speed along that particular road. It told me to take a break every hour and also on the hour announced the time.
The software and web site to update the information to the device was very easy; the only problem is I can see for other users are downloading the updates and the speed of the internet.
If you are thinking of buying a speed camera detector and are unsure, I would buy a Talex.
