I remember reading issues of Time and Tide magazine from the 1930 and especially enjoying the contributions from a character called 'Rosa Dartle' on the letters page. These were always deceptively simple questions - I can't remember precise examples now but let's say 'why is that the rich complain about the poor having too much money?' and the letter would end 'I only ask because I want to know.' 'Rosa Dartle' was a name taken from Dickens and for all I know Jack MacRoary has some particular Scottish antecedants - just as Tatty Bogle does. Jack is an innocent voice asking deceptively innocent questions about 'the digital masses' and ';the cultural elite' The reader may leap in to offer a conventional adult answer but Jack's persistence and clear-eyed confusion may make him or her think again, question his or her assumptions, just as 'Rosa Dartle' did.
