Product Description

Review

To a certain extent every attempt to translate lived experience onto paper is doomed to failure, and it takes not only a skilled writer but also a skilful practitioner to elicit in the reader some of the sense of humanity, immediacy and reality of the original relationship while not retreating into sentimentality and narcissism … Spinelli's book is difficult to put down and one is continually reminded with a vivid clarity of the personal and universal dilemmas of the interlocking of normal and therapeutic live. --Martin Adams, Regency College --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Comprising of a selection of cases drawn from the author's own practice, this text on existential therapy explains the core of his work and why the existential approach is the way forward in the treatment of the psychological condition. Told with a literary style reminiscent of Oliver Sacks, the encounters introduce us to Mr Jones, who refused to grow old gracefully, to introverted Amanda who believed she had been given the wrong body, to Jim the octogenarian who lived in two time zones. In the course of the book, the author also tackles the great taboo of therapeutic practice - sexual attraction between therapist and client.

As I recall it, there is a scene towards the end of François Truffaut's 1971 feature film, Anne and Muriel (Les Deux Anglaises et le Continent),1 that in its stark simplicity perfectly captures a moment of chilling awareness. Read the first page

This book is an illuminating and informative 'autobiography' of an existential therapist's experiences of work, and a brave examination of what a therapist can learn from the therapeutic relationship. Honest and readable, it describes, explains, and informs the reader about the process and practice of therapy with a skill and care for the client which is both warm and engaging. A little slow to start, it pays perseverence very well.

This book is a marvellous window into the world of Spinelli's psychotherapy practice. Existential psychotherapeutic theory is notoriously difficult to grasp, but the best way to understand is by seeing the therapy session in action. Spinelli's notion of "Unknowing" is a beautiful and modest one and here he is seen to practise what he preaches.

This is an excellent text and I would recommend it to both beginners and experienced therapists. It shows how the therapeutic encounter needs to have its own pace and life. It is wonderfully written, full of insight and wisdom.
