2.0 out of 5 stars Apraisal of Tales of the Unexpected, 2 Jan 2004

This review is from: Tales of the Unexpected - Vol. 1 [DVD] [1979] (DVD)
All of the tales in this series have the rather dated look from the 70's / early 80's but I found most of them entertaining nonetheless. The downside is that none of the tales are based on the stories by Roald Dahl which was disappointing as these were the ones that always had a more dark gruesome twist at the end and left one's skin crawling. My suggestion would be for Amazon to look out for the possibility of securing rights to distribute the original Roald Dahl stories on DVD as this would make a far more thrilling collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A little too predictable., 23 Mar 2005
This review is from: Tales of the Unexpected - Vol. 1 [DVD] [1979] (DVD)
Very often, it's the celebrities in programmes which make it enjoyable, no matter how shallow the storyline is. That is true of these four Tales of the Unexpected. The first centres around a business man who is seduced by a woman. This in turn starts the wheels in motion for a swindle of indirect blackmail. John Duttine and Susan Penhaligan make the second tale another fine performance whereby a man is continually harassed by his wife. She vanishes. Leaves the obligatory note. Sounds like a Dr Crippen story? Almost, but remember this has a twist.
The third tale is 'Have and nice death' and features Simon Cadell - of Hi-de-hi fame -as an English male-chauvinist writer, who appears on an American chat show to promote his new book. He then receives threatening phone calls, as expected. Who are the calls coming from? Most probably women, but what kind of women could they be? It is this which makes this gives this story a sting in the tale. The Reconciliation has to be the worst programme I have ever witnessed. The plot is : a man wants a divorce from his wife, but she refuses to give him one. Yet he is jealous of her. Now there's something unexpected for you!
