I agree with the previous review. Wimple Winch recorded three great freakbeat tracks which attracted me to this compilation, but there is little else to get excited about. The first fourteen tracks could have been dropped without any problem. The songs, mainly their own, are mediocre and the performances lack bite, the work of a neat, tidy and lacklustre beat combo. The next two tracks show a hardening up of the sound, though the material is no better. The gems are 'Save Your Soul', 'Rumble on Mersey Square South' and 'Atmospheres', all of which display the menace and fire missing from the rest of the disc. They could easily be by a different band.

Sadly, they didn't progress. 'Bluebell Wood' marks a shift toward a gentle, sunshine pop style. This and the next couple of tracks are decent enough for what they are, but are nowhere near as effective. The CD ends with a handful of pedestrian pop singles, pretty much The Fortunes, etc without the melodies. As for 'Typical British Workmanship', this track may set your teeth on edge. The best bet is to acquire their three classics on a various artists compilation.

If you heard the awesome Save My Soul on the Nuggets 2 complication, then,like me you'll have been drawn to this. However, Nuggets really did pick the best thing they ever did, in my opinion.Up to track 17 is the stuff they did as Just Four Men, and is pretty mediocre, demo-quality Merseybeat.Then the Wimple Winch material kicks in, and it's great until, ooh, track 20 (notwithstanding the truly risible Scouse novelty tune Typical British Workmanship) but this energy soon dissipates into Spinal Tap psychedelia and wishy washy folk rock. Remember EPs? The essential tracks would have made an excellent one.
