Review
`By casting her narrative in the form of a first-person journal, Gulland invests it with vividness and immediacy, so that one sometimes forgets it is a historical novel, and reads it with a real sense of surprise at each development` (Times Metro )

'Straightforward and likeable re-telling of the life of Josephine Buonaparte is laced with ribbons and period detail' (Independent )

'Packed with captivating historical detail' (Daily Telegraph )

Gulland has huge fun ... nothing seems beyond the grasp of her imagination. In her hands Josephine B puts in a stellar performance. Now tender, now triste, she's the Jackie O of her day' (Guardian )

'Richly detailed historical novel' (Nottingham Evening Post ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Installment of Josephine's Diaries, 30 Dec 2000
By A Customer
The second in the trilogy of the Josephine Boneparte diaries is written with the same level of intensity as the first. It follows Josephine from the beginning of her marriage to Napoleon to the time they move into the palace and Napoleon is in control of the French government. Personal description and emotion drive the diary making it absolutely gripping without embellishing or deviating from history. Josephine remains an admirable and sympathetic character while the pictures of her family and close friends become alive with detail. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 31 Dec 2008
By Cathy Jones "Wales Forever" (Crewe, Cheshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are keen on Josephine in her own right and don't think she is just the shadow of Napoleon then this is the book for you.

She has often been portrayed as a hussy/tart but Sandra gulland has done marvalously in putting her personality, emotion, soul and heart into word and onto the page.

I am an ardent fan of Ms Beaucharnais/Bonaparte and if you are to then please buy the whole triology.

It is set in diary form and 1st person obviously and is done with great talant. You can just imagine what she must of been seeing and experencing as she wrote.. (if she had wrote it like as obviously this is a Alison Weir style book of "could be" diary.) the descriptions are excellent and I could not put it down and as you see their marriage slowly breaking apart, you feel it too. As you read her pain in the prison when the revolt hit... this is in her 1st book, you cry with her and can imagine every image and smell and sight.

Trust me it is an absolute must read and gets into the very heart and soul of the beautiful and famous Josephine Boneparte.

PLUS... you get little indicators like this * and at the bottom the * starts to tell you little facts of why things have happened and/or just general historical facts for your pleasure. YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT!

Well done Sandra.

3.0 out of 5 stars light and frivolous, 24 Sep 2007

I'm afraid that I don't agree with the other reviewer here about the emotion in this book, as I find it singularly lacking in intensity. Perhaps partly because of the journal format the tale skims along lightly and never deepens. Josephine is at her most irritating for me in this book of the trilogy as she's just too much of a people pleaser. That said, this is the perfect bed-time read filling the time before sleep beautifully.
