This series 8 compilation has an average collection of tales. There are 3 or 4 quite good tales but the majority are unmemorable. I had to read inside the cover again to remind myself what some of them were about. There are quite a few famous faces as you would expect, including a doctor who (peter davison)a current "Emmerdale" cast member (Kim Thomson), the very pretty one with red hair, the lead character in "Poirot" (David Suchet), a current "Eastenders2 character (Glynis Barber) who starred in the 80s series "Dempsey and Makepeace", and Mrs Bucket from the tv series "Keeping Up Appearances" (Patricia Routledge). The best tales are about a dead person who gets revenge in an unsuspecting way, a tale about an author who writes a book about someone who doesn't suspect its about them until the end, and a tale about a couple who meet in an unsual way and end up getting hitched.

This is certainly not the best series, although like me you may want to add to your ever increasing collection of these very watchable series. Good value for money though, compared to other series. What I will always praise about all these series is the exceptional packaging, which is quite rare nowadays with dvds. Not the best series, but watchable nevertheless. I recommend buying the earlier series first.

The best of the collection--they left the best till last, with first-rate casts and stories--particularly Somerset Maugham tales.

Having watched every episode in order, overall TOTU - The Complete series 8 (actually all bar one episode of series 9) ends on a high note with some very good episodes. Moved away from the US episodes which is probably a good thing. Probably the best season in terms of overall episode quality and the proportion of higher quality episodes. Even the weaker ones are better than the weaker ones of previous seasons.

The Colonel's Lady: Very well performed drama; quite humble for TOTU with a suitable twist 9/10
The Surgeon: Typical TOTU episode hence VHS release. Multiple turns and twists 8/10
The Verger: A lighter episode, very well acted with nice poignant ending 8/10
The Facts of Life: A bit dated and harder to watch, but reasonable overall 6/10
Wink Three Times: A weaker bedroom farce episode with very nice performances 6/10
The Dead Don't Steal: Hard hitting drama from hard hitting actors 7/10
The Finger of Suspicion: Nice twist but less good story 5.5/10
A Time to Die: David Suchet is superb in this very ironic of tales 8/10
Mr Know-All: Very engaging episode about a con-man and unconventional twist 7/10

After nine seasons of twists and tales is it the best TOTU season? The twists are on average less harsh because some are quite nice. The dramatic quality is at its peak and the cast selection had probably not been bettered in previous seasons.

Season nine (listed here as eight) was made up of ten episodes. Here are nine, and the first was on the previous release. This episode, Skeletons in the Cupboards was also a top notch episode, which goes to show that the production team, after some turbulent years finally got it spot one; and there is the final appropriate TOTU irony...why did it then have to end.
