Watching the series on dvd after seeing it aired on television some years back, you feel as if you're in the company of old friends!, honest but shockable Mary Ann, the panto hiss Beecham, and the wonderful Anna Madrigal. I put it on thinking I would only watch one episode but ending up watching the whole series. It's fantastic, a real slice of San Francisco in the 70's, the characters so real and beautifully played in their parts by Olympia Dukakis, Laura Linney,Chloe Webb and Paul Gross to name a few.
The only tiny flaw is on epidode 3, the character of Norman and Dorothea are'nt fully explained so you have to run with it and I felt that could be confusing if you had'nt seen it before.
Anyway suffice to say, I'm going to order series two and continue my indulgence of all of those who live in Barbary Lane and their friendships! and suggest you do the same!

A gem! 9 Jun 2008
By Izen
A hidden gem for me as I came across to it by chance! However, as the character Mrs Madriga says "you don't choose Barbary Lane, it choses you".

An amazing combination of "Sex and the city" and "Queer as Folk", with the only difference that it is their predecessor by a decade or more. Also, it is more political, poetic and romantic focusing on the life experiences and the struggles of its characters, rather than the latest Manolo Blahnik or the new Prada collection as highlights in someone's life.

I couldn't recommend this DVD more. Flirts with the quality of a Tennessee Williams theatrical play, but in a more openly gay and liberated way as it is the city itself.

Every character is capturing but "Mouse" played by Marcus D'Amico will steal your heart.

I went to university at Berkeley in the 1970s, across the bay from San Francisco at the time during which this story takes place. "Tales of the City" was already popular as a serial in the San Francisco newspaper, and was rather innovative in the way it took inspiration from day-to-day social life in that city at that time - public figures, popular restaurants and clubs, and local fads figured prominently in the story. At the time, I didn't care for the serial. It was a little too precious and self-congratulatory of its self-perceived hipness. I was a poor college student living in a ghetto apartment, and the hedonistic, romantic lifestyle of the characters of Tales of the City didn't match my own experience of San Francisco.

But watching this mini-series has been a wonderful surprise for me. The San Francisco it describes never really existed, but something very, very close to it really did exist, once upon a time, before the Reagan revolution and the AIDS epidemic. It's long gone, but this series was scripted and filmed by people who seem to have understood it. Good writing, and very good acting by almost everyone in the cast, from Thomas Gibson (now of Criminal Minds fame) and Olympia Dukakis to less famous players.

As I own a multi-region player, I ordered this edition from the UK rather than buy the US box set, as I had been warned that when they produced the US version, they flinched at some of the strong language used and overdubbed some of the dialogue to make it less "shocking". Sigh. It was worth a few quid in postage to get the real thing!

As good as when I first saw it on TV
A brilliant interweaving of multiple storylines in a great setting, both time and place. The series just draws you in with its warmth and real sense of humanity. Read more

Not for me
Didn't like this much, read the books and so much better than the series. Very dated but that is to be expected, of course. First series better than the second. Just okay.

A cut too far
Interesting to hear what has been cut. Can't see the point in this, considering its author and his efforts in keeping the programme true to the books why has this been done,... Read more
