Biography

Biographyby Richie Unterberger

The most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel crafted a series of memorable hit albums and singles featuring their choirboy harmonies, ringing acoustic and electric guitars, and Simon's acute, finely wrought songwriting. The pair always inhabited the more polished end of the folk-rock spectrum and was sometimes criticized for a certain… Read more in Amazon's Simon & Garfunkel Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Tales From New York stands as the pre-eminent introduction to the music of Simon & Garfunkel. This updated retrospective boasts 40 tracks over two CDs, as well as less well known recordings of "The Only Living Boy In New York" and "My Little Town--a one-off the twosome did five years after they ended their phenomenally successful partnership. Remastered from the original source tapes, Tales From New York also boasts far superior sound to any earlier hits collections. --Steven Stolder

I agree totally with the other reviwers. This album is a timeless classic. It will not only bring a lump to your throat, but a tear to your eye and a shiver to your spine!
Simon and Garfunkel's pure 'choirboy' voices in 'Scarborough Fair' and 'For Emily Whenever I May Find Her' are staggeringly beautiful.
If you were there in the 60's or 70's, if you've ever been in love or out of love, or both, then you'll love it!
I've got all the other S. and G. albums on vinyl but I still play this constantly. It's exquisite. Get it now!

my first memory of hearing s&g is when i was about 5 and i was sitting in the car with my dad on the way to my grandparents. my dad was singing along to the tape playing mrs robinson, and my little sister and i were trying to sing aong with it because we really enjoyed it. About 2 years ago i heard the tape again and asked my dad who it was by.A few days later i was in a charity shop and stumbled upon this cd.i took it home and ever since,it has never left my cd player!i have nearly all of s&gs records, and i am an avid fan!my favourite song on this album is "kathys song",it is so heartfelt and genuine, you can feel the emotion in mr simons voice. There are plenty of tracks so something for everyone, old favourites such as mrs robinson, wednesday 3am,america, el condor pasa etc i think it at an exceptional price for so many classics, its almost criminal!seeing artie in concert has heightened my passion for their music, and if you cant see them in concert buy this cd,and sing along to your hearts content. People of all ages will love this, myself being 18 and my parents in their 50's all adore their music!so what are you waiting for?go get it NOW!

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were better together than apart, because they had such different talents. Paul was a brilliant songwriter - certainly one of the best of his generation - and a good singer without being anything special. Art was not a songwriter, but he had a superb voice which brought out the best in Paul's songs.

So, here we have 40 of their finest recordings, digitally remastered to sound better than ever, with most of the songs written by Paul and Art doing most of the singing. Of course, all the obvious tracks are included - Bridge over troubled water, Mrs Robinson, Homeward bound, Sound of silence, The boxer, Cecilia, Feeling groovy, I am a rock, America and El condor pasa (If I could) - but this collection contains a further 30 tracks which are all of a very high quality.

Among them are Hazy shade of winter (a song revived brilliantly by the Bangles in the eighties), the upbeat but rueful Keep the customer satisfied, Baby driver - another upbeat song, a live cover version of Bye bye love, not forgetting the superb Scarborough fair/Canticle.

After the split, Paul and Art each had some success as solo singers, but despite some great individual moments, they never achieved the level of consistency separately that they achieved together - and this is the best collection you'll ever find, unless you want to go for the boxed set from which these tracks were selected.
