Book Description

Much more than a travel memoir …
it’s an invitation to go and see for yourself.

Whether roaming through forests of forbidden fruits or wandering in swaying fields of sunflowers, it’s time to head off to the next mediaeval marvel and the next four-course feast. Pedalling along curvaceous country lanes or freewheeling through valleys and vineyards – earning your supper in this sleepy corner of France is nothing short of a privilege.

Tony and Ludmilla have landed a job with a specialist cycling and walking holiday company in the South of France … but that’s not something we can hold against them for too long!

They head off to the mediaeval marvel of Cordes-sur-Ciel in the Tarn – a region so achingly beautiful and laden with history and mystery they have to pinch themselves to be sure such a place really does exist.

When their cyclists turn up for a week’s pedal-powered adventure they will need a reliable back-up service when they puncture a tyre or come face to jowl with a ‘devil dog’ intent on devouring their panniers. And when their walkers take the wrong trail and find themselves humming Bonnie Tyler’s ’70s hit ‘Lost in France’, they too will need a timely rescue. Well, that’s the theory …

About the Author

Tony Lewis is the author of 'If Only I Could Talk - a Canine Adventure' and 'Tales from the Hilltop - a summer in the other South of France'. Tony was born the wrong side of four decades ago in the heavily accented heart of Northern England. 5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully humorous and atmospheric. 23 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Tales from the Hilltop is a wonderful read, full of the sounds, sights and delicious aromas of summer in the south of France. Tony Lewis writes with gentle authority and great humour, instantly bringing the reader into his world. His amusing and often frustrating experiences with the French authorities, local hoteliers and restaurateurs, mad dogs and their indifferent owners, the tourists who use the cycle and walking routes he maintains, and his elderly French landlords will have you chuckling with sympathy and delight. The snippets of history and atmospheric descriptions he provides all add to the fulfilment of reading this book. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a good read - ideal for taking on holiday!

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it and then go there.... We are! 5 Oct. 2013
Format:Paperback
Recently downloaded and read this book. Did not know much about the area Tony was writing about and came about it by chance while pondering where to go on holiday next year in France. What a great read, evocative, you get a great sense of place, humorous, charming and really well written. Not going to regurgitate the story (down load and read it yourself!) All going to say is that as a result of reading it we have now booked a 2 week holiday in the Tarn for next summer. No better recommendation than that. Will be taking Tony's book with us and possibly cycling in his tyre tracks....

5.0 out of 5 stars France? Yes Please. 25 April 2014
Format:Paperback
After spending many years traveling backwards and forwards from France I lost the feeling of what made it special but after reading this book it brought back some very special memories. If you get a chance check out Tony's other book (If Only I Could Talk) it will bring a tear to even the hardest heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully descriptive. 10 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One thing about living in France that you soon realise is that it is so vast, and all the regions hold their own special charm. Never having visited this particular region, the wonderfully descriptive writings of the author made me want to visit.

The author has a job many would envy, running a summer outdoor pursuits business with his wife, in a beautiful location. The book, is a fly on the wall, glimpse into their life. The characters they meet both through their work, and locally are guaranteed to make you smile and I would think most people would find this an entertaining read.

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Excellent book that was really well written. Unlike so many books for kindle this author took the time to write his story without leaving big gaps so you don't lnow whats happening. I read every book I find on living in France and this is up there with a year in provence for it's quality

Finished it last night - thoroughly enjoyed it.
Have stayed in that region of France several times over the last few years and it brought it all back so clearly as I remember so many of the places - Cordes and Puycelsi being favourites
