There are eleven stories in this collection - and unfortunately it`s all we have of L.A. Lewis. He had written more stories, but because he couldn`t find a publisher he destroyed them in a fit of manic depression. This lack of recognition was terrible for him, but almost just as bad for us, because these are simply some of the most impressive and scary stories I have ever read. The idea that there could have been more (even just a few), just makes me sad.

That said: at least we have these eleven stories. Tightly plotted and told with a good pace, they easily drag you in a world of wonder and fear. Whether it is an unfinished tower, build by some sect, an airplane with a disturbing history, or the usual "village with a secret" (The child, easily one of the scariest stories I have ever read), every single tale is memorable. So I hope that L.A. Lewis will finally find the audience he so richly deservers, because this is one of the best collections in the world of horror. It should stand right next to your M.R. James and H.P. Lovecraft.

On a more personal note, I want to thank Richard Dalby for all his efforts (read the introduction) and Shadow Publishing for giving me a chance to read these stories. I love horror and L.A. Lewis is a great find.

Format: Paperback
A collection of short supernatural stories was originally written over 80 years ago by a Squadron Leader in the Royal Flying Corp, who had flown in both World War I and II.
The topics vary from airplanes with evil, twisted souls ‘The Iron Swine’, in which an airplane constantly tries (and succeeds) to kill its pilots, to a houseboat haunted by a girl being eaten alive by fishes ‘Animate in Death’, to an organist trying to unleash Chaos through his music in ‘Chords of Chaos’. They are all hugely entertaining though, and pull the reader straight into the world that Lewis creates.

All of Lewis’ work still resonates, over 80 years later, and are exceptionally gripping and engaging. These are definitely a collection worth seeking out and enjoying in a darkened room, with just the flicker of a candle flame to keep you company…
