5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best of all Zane Grey collections., 14 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Not for one-track-minded anglers who want their images from rod-manufacturers' catalogs. These fishing stories set on the East and West Coasts of the US and Canada are for the genuine amateur of real adventure and escape. It's not about fishing, but about angling experience in wild places, about pristine landscapes and waters and impressive wildlife. Long ,strenuous, dangerous hikes, tough pack trips on unruly horses, scary river running in wooden boats are as much part of the game as the bodycount.
Physical exertion, injuries, bruises and blisters, long streaks of bad luck, frustration and occasional despair are the core of these stories.
Clearly this book is by somebody who loved the American wilderness and saw hunting and fishing as an almost religious ritual to feel at one with this wild but vanishing environment.
There are moments of disappointment when locals and human structures are found in places where solitude was expected. There's anger at the intrusion of cars and roads. There's wrath at the over-exploitation of the natural resources by scrupleless anglers, hunters, mining and logging companies. Resentment at the US Goverment for failing to protect these resources.
The bulk of this volume is made up by Grey's lifelong love affair with the massive Rogue River of Oregon and its fierce steelhead.
The story entitled "Deer Creek" is the quintessential fishing tale of legendary steelhead in a remote stream, only reached after a backbreaking ride.It is my favourite because it combines unity of time, impression and location. Read in one sitting, in a rocking-chair by a winter's fire, with a bottle of malt at hand, the magic of Grey's words really gets working and carries you off to the steep, amber forests of the Pacific Northwest.
