5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous collection of short stories, 28 Jan 2009
By M. Harris "Shelley Harris" (Marlow, Bucks, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book to buy if you love short stories. It's the second collection from the monthly short story readings at Foyles Bookshop in London, the 'best of the best' from the past two years. You don't have to be a Londoner to enjoy it (I'm not), as its subject matter ranges from jogging in New York to a car crash in New Zealand, from a surreal train ride in 50s France to the journey of a hospital ship from Africa in 1943.

Some stories surprise, some move and some just entertain. Some - as is always the case with anthologies - don't quite hit the mark, but by and large this collection has a very good hit rate.

My favourite stories - for what it's worth - come from Claire Munro in her cracking 'Freecycle', Emily Bromfield for 'One Way to Cook An Eel', Sara Hiorns for 'Perfect Size Nines' and Vanessa Gebbie for 'How Claude Romarin Lost the Buttocks of Celestine Bigorneaux'.

Enjoy it!
