book review 20 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
I wasn't too sure what to expect with this, as steampunk is a genre that has no clear demarcation in fiction, but these are GREAT stories. Written by writers who obviiusly love fiction, they range from outright horror in the HP Lovecraft vein, to HG Wellsisan 'the effects technology has on us', a moon landing with a hell of a twist in the tail at the time of Queen Victoria, social commentory, and more. The authors in here have done a painstaking job of crafting these stories, and balance tension and suspense with gentle shafts of houmour, in-jokes ( there is a great Dr Who refrence, and a sly nod to Holmes more than once) as well as combining traditional English folk tales and the expansion of a a steam-driven Victorian Empire and what some of the effects of this could have been...finished this in a night, and would certainly recommend it to anyone!

A flawed masterpiece 29 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This book is something of an enigma.

A certain amount of passion is evident in every page, at times compromising the technical finesse of some writers, but there is a certain naļveté about these stories which makes them all the more compelling. There is an impression that the book is the work of steampunks writing science-fiction rather than science-fiction writers attempting to capitalise on the steampunk trend, which makes for a thoroughly engaging read.

The stories are a strange mix of horror and science-fiction, often blurring at the edges, held together by a narrator in the form of the warden Arkwright. In many ways, it reminds me of certain television programs I watched growing up; like The Outer Limits (or perhaps The Hunger), each story is book-ended and placed in its proper context. Like these television programs, the quality is likewise variable, but the brevity of each tale and range of styles stopped me from ever really losing interest.

In all, this is a book for fans of the steampunk genre. It is a little raw around the edges, but vibrant in a way that mass-market fiction sometimes fails to manage. I look forward to seeing more from these writers and I do not expect that I will be disappointed.

Tales From the Asylum 19 Sep 2011
By Red
Format:Paperback
Absolutely brilliant, individual, fantastic stories. Exceptionally well written. It takes the reader on a journey to absolute madness in wishing to read and finish them, to get their own sanity back. Will read this book over again. Definitely a keeper.
