Lovely to get hold of this old book written in the 1800s by an American diplomat Washington Irving, who lived at The Alhambra for a few years and wrote these stories. This book is difficult to find these days, even at The Alhambra Palace itself. Good clean well cared for copy with coloured lithographs.

Following a visit to Granada and the Alhambra this year, I thought I should read this, and found myself absolutely engrossed in the old tales. Despite the restorations in the Alhambra since it was written, it was relatively easy to follow where everything took place, and I loved Irving's style - I found it relaxing and very evocative of the place. The illustrations are interesting too, giving a real indication of how much it has been restored since Irving's day.

Just back from a tour of Classical Spain taking in Cordoba, Seville and of course Granada. Washington Irving's book is beautifully written and conjures up all the romance, magic and atmosphere of Moorish Spain with some of the history thrown in as well. This is a very nice edition of the book and includes some lovely coloured reproductions of contemporary prints showing parts of the Alhambra and the surrounding area. Recommended as a perfect reminder of a beautiful place.

Irving was obviously a great scholar and character. This book is written with an immediacy and humor that makes you feel that you are walking around the Alhambra with him. It provides escapism that is refreshingly different from today's 'smart' and push-button world.
