James Willby, Xavier Deluc, Serena Gordon, John Mills & Anna Massey star in this gripping adaptation of Charles Dickens' immortal story of love and honour set against the fiery backdrop of the French Revolution. Living in exile in England, the beautiful young Lucie Manette finds herself pursued by two suitors - fellow exile Charles Darnay and a dissolute and cynical Englishman, Sydney Carton. She chooses Charles unaware of his secret past and noble heritage. As the French Revolution breaks out, Charles and his family head for Paris to help a former servant in trouble - only to discover that the terrors of the Revolution are far worse than they realised. Anarchy is loosed upon Paris. Justice is no more. Now is the time to settle old scores - and there are those with scores to settle against Charles Darnay. With the shadow of the guillotine now looming over the Darnay family, Sydney Carton must make the ultimate gesture of love and sacrifice. Charles Dickens' classic plot of eighteenth century intrigue and high passion has never been bettered - and this stellar Anglo-French cast, featuring John Mills, Xavier Deluc and Serena Gordon do it full justice as the action swings fast and furious between London and pre-revolution Paris. The release of unjustly imprisoned physician Alexander Manette from the Bastille inextricably links the fates of his daughter Lucy and the mysterious yet charming Frenchman Charles Darnay who accompanies them to London. When lookalike Sydney Carton rescues Damay from the gallows, he too becomes involved in the thickening plot. In Paris, passions are inflamed as the Bastille falls and old scores are settled at the guillotine. Charles Damay has a mission to accomplish there, but no-one is quite sure what it is - or who, indeed, he is. All is revealed as history comes back to haunt the Manette family, to whose daughter Lucy Damay is now to be married - if the cruel hand of fate can be stayed Directed by Phillippe Monnier

sublime Wilby 23 Jan 2010
